details of death

In 1881‐1891 was a reserve chaplain of the Austro–Hungarian Imperial Army.

At the end of World War I, on 16.10.1918, the Emperor of Austria, Charles I, issued a manifesto Germ. Völkermanifest — „To My Faithful Austrian Subjects” — announcing the transformation of Austria–Hungary into a federal state. Not only did it not prevent the disintegration of the Empire, but it actually accelerated it. The issue of the imperial province and crown land, Germ. Königreich Galizien und Lodomerien (Eng. Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria), became a burning one, which turned into an open Polish–Ukrainian conflict. The first to attack were the Ukrainians — slightly outnumbering people of Polish nationality, especially in the villages, while in the cities the Poles significantly outnumbered them — who already on 01.11.1918 announced the establishment of the West Ukrainian People's Republic ZUNR and at the same time attacked the capital of Eastern Galicia, Lviv. The Polish–Ukrainian war 1918‐1919 began.

The Ukrainians failed to capture Lviv and on 11.11.1918 the battle for the city was still going on. And it was on that day — when in the staff carriage in Compiègne, in the headquarters of French Marshal Ferdinand Foch, the Entente Allies and Germany signed an armistice and ceasefire, which de facto meant the end of World War I; when in Warsaw the Regency Council, operating in the territory occupied by the Central Powers (Germany and Austria–Hungary), the so‐called Germ. Königreich Polen (Eng. Polish Kingdom), transferred supreme command of the army to Brigadier Jospeh Piłsudski and appointed him Commander‐in‐Chief of the Polish Army, which de facto meant the rebirth of the Polish state — Ukrainians attacked his parish village of Sokolniki, c. 8 km from the centre of Lviv.

They set fire to the village.

Approached then, together with a local primary school teacher and the village mayor, the commander of the attackers, with a request to stop the plunder and destruction of property.

All were captured by the Ukrainians.

Were dragged through the entire village, through the fields, to a roadside cross.

There were murdered — shot.

On the same day, the Ukrainians murdered 12 other people.

Polish‐Ukrainian war of 1918‐1919: One of the wars for borders of the newly reborn Poland. At the end of 1918 on the former Austro‐Hungarian empire’s territory, based on the Ukrainian military units of the former Austro‐Hungarian army, Ukrainians waged war against Poland. In particular attempted to create foundation of an independent state and attacked Lviv. Thanks to heroic stance of Lviv inhabitants, in particular young generation of Poles — called since then Lviv eaglets — the city was recaptured by Poles and for a number of months successfully defended against furious Ukrainian attacks. In 1919 Poland — its newly created army — pushed Ukrainian forces far to the east and south, regaining control over its territory. (more on: en.wikipedia.orgClick to attempt to display webpage
