details of death
Arrested in 1919 in Vinnytsia by the Russians.
Tortured and murdered.
This event took place during a chaotic period in Ukraine, after the end of the World War I, when armies of newly established Ukrainian Peoples Republic URL, South Russian Armed Forces of Gen. Denikin and Russian Bolshevik units, all vied for ascendancy.
In 1919, Vinntysia changed hands several times. Until 06.03.1919, it was ruled by the forces of the Ukrainian People's Republic URL, a state proclaimed after the fall of tsarism in Russia in 02.1917, which actually came into existence on 09.03.1918, when the Germans and Austrians signed a peace treaty in Brest–Litovsk, de facto recognizing the URL and excluding Poles from talks about the future of Ukrainian lands (and recognizing the Chełm region, Lviv, etc. as Ukrainian lands). Next the gangs of Russian Bolsheviks ruled the city. It was then that the greatest crimes in the city took place, with especially Poles falling victim to them. On 10.08.1919, URL Ukrainians returned, after the expulsion of the Ukrainian Galician Army UAH from Poland during the Polish–Ukrainian War of 1918‐1919 (on 30.08.1919, during their rule, a pogrom against Jews took place), and in 12.1919 Bolsheviks took over.
On 24.07.1919 Polish writer, Sophia Kossak, noted: „I cannot write, cannot think about the cursed, unhappy Vinntysia […] So far, three thousand people were condemned and murdered by Cheka [i.e. Bolshevik genocidal political police]. None of them died peacefully but through sophisticated, terrible torments. Some were crucified, bound around with barbed wire, impaled, skinned, burned to death”.
She was writing about local Polish intelligentsia and landowners, about members of the local branch of the clandestine Polish Military Organization POW who did not even manage to take part in the fights for Poland.

Polish‐Russian war of 1919‐1921: War for independence of Poland and its borders. Poland regained independence in 1918 but had to fight for its borders with former imperial powers, in particular Russia. Russia planned to incite Bolshevik‐like revolutions in the Western Europe and thus invaded Poland. Russian invaders were defeated in 08.1920 in a battle called Warsaw battle („Vistula river miracle”, one of the 10 most important battles in history, according to some historians). Thanks to this victory Poland recaptured part of the lands lost during partitions of Poland in XVIII century, and Europe was saved from the genocidal Communism.
