At the turn of 1915‐1916, during World War I, called up to the German army (formally was a subject of the Kingdom of Prussia, part of the German Empire) and forced to interrupt his novitiate.

On 18.02.1916 — together with co‐student Alois Rother, among others — sent to a mobilization site in Pirna in Saxony where some units, mainly field artillery, of one of the Royal Saxony Corps (XII or XIX) of German 3rd Army were forming.

On the front (prob. in Romania, after this country entered war on the Allies side, or western, during second battle of Aisne in 04‐05.1917) contracted diphtheria.

Transported to a hospital in Płock where soon perished.
