Perished as a result of artillery shell explosion, prob. German, in his rectory, when on 15.11.1914 was getting ready to go to church to celebrate Sunday Holy Mass ‐ during battles of Łęczyca, a part of wider battle of Łódź, known also as battle of Brzeziny (11.11.1914‐06.12.1914), during German–Russian skirmishes at the beginning of the World War I.
The battles of Łęczyca — initially in Russian hands — started in 10.1914, with participation of 1st Infantry Regiment of Polish Legions under Col. Joseph Piłsudski fighting within Austro–Hungarian 7th Cavalry Division.
On 27‐28.10.1914 during Russian counter–offensive German artillery caused large devastation of the Łęczyca and its surrounds.
As a result Łęczyca was captured on 15.11.1914 by the German and Austro–Hungarian troops.
A deciding battle took place next day on 16.11.1914 on the fields of nearby Wichrowa and Wilczkowice villages.
Russians were defeated.
