At the beginning of World War I of 1914‐1918 drafted into the German Imperial Army as a chaplain.
Initially ministered in medical units, also serving as a nurse, and then as a field chaplain on the Western Front in France.
Caught a cold at a soldiers' funeral and died of pneumonia.
It took place — Longuyon, where perished, was located at the rear of the fighting front, c. 35 km from Verdun — during the so‐called 100 Days Offensive, i.e. a series of offensives of the Entente forces (mainly French and English troops) against the Central Powers on the Western Front on 08.08‐11.11.1918, which led to the pushing of German troops from France beyond the so‐called the Hindenburg Line and the Armistice of Compiègne that ended World War I.
