details of death
First arrested in 1917 in Taganrog — after the overthrow of tsarism in 02.1917 — by representatives of the new provisional government, which he publicly opposed.
Released after protests by representatives of his flock in front of the prison where he was held.
At the end of 1917, prob. after the provisional government was overthrown and the Bolsheviks took power, expelled from the capital of his new diocese of Tver.
While ministering in the Penza and Saransk eparchy (1918‐1921) repeatedly detained and interrogated by the Bolshevik authorities.
Trying to solve the crisis tearing apart his eparchy, arrested by the Bolsheviks, among others on 27.09.1918.
Held in Penza prison — his name was on the list of people to be murdered.
Released from prison in c. 10.1918 thanks to the intervention of the German consul — and held under house arrest.
In 06.1919 conscripted into the Bolshevik army — thanks to the intervention of his flock the decision got postponed.
In 11.1919 arrested again by the genocidal Bolshevik organization All–Russian Extraordinary Commission for Combating Counter–Revolution, Speculation and Abuse of Power, commonly known as the Cheka, and accused of being a member of a „counter–revolutionary organization”.
Initially held in prison in Penza, later in 1920 transferred to a prison in Moscow.
Released in 03.1920.
After assuming the function of the bishop of the Eparchy of Riga in the Republic of Latvia, settled in the summer estate of his eparchy, near Riga — lived there alone, without protection, which he rejected.
Murdered on the night of 11‐12.10.1934, by unknown perpetrators.
The murderers set the house on fire, but it was brought under control by firefighters.
His body bore traces of torture, his personal archive was looted.
Some historians suspect Russian militias of the genocidal NKVD of the crime.
