general info

Syczyn

Excerpt from the interrogation report of Mikołaj Kałużny, an inhabitant of Syczyn, about the murder of Ukrainians:
On May 2, 1945, I was walking in the evening as the mayor of the Syczyn community from a session in the countryside  […] I noticed that from Kolonia Werejka some army in uniforms was riding in carts, on foot, or on horseback. WP. There were over 50 people, they were divided into two groups. One operated on the other side from the church [the word illegible], the other on the other side. When they passed the forge, I  […] followed them. One of them, a platoon leader, approached me, asked me who I was, and when he found out that I was the head of the village, he asked me where the Ukrainians lived. I said that they left, they are at the station in Chełm. A second came and asked the platoon who it was. He said that the mayor gave me a horse and ordered me to hold it, and they both walked around us. At that time, I heard shots from automatic machines near the church. They were about an hour and a half. A soldier rode up on horseback and called him «lieutenant, sir, commander». I told him that I had brought grain for sowing for the repatriates, 20 meters of oats and barley so that they would not rob me, this 'commandant' said that he did not need grain, only the Ukrainians  […]
After their departure, I found out that this band killed: the first group — Denis Stefan, around 80, Waszkiewicz Dymitr, around 80, Wolińska (I don't know her name), priest's wife, around 50‑60, and they robbed them, but I was not told what they had taken. The second group killed: Lewczuk, Ksenia, 50, Stepaniuk, Katarzyna, around 80, they also robbed everything that was left of clothes, food, cows and one or two pigs  […] I buried the murdered people with the help of people in the cemetery in Syczyn, Olchowiec commune. As I learned later from people, the murder and looting was carried out by a gang under the command of [Eugeniusz Walewski] 'Revenge'

Fragment of a study from the 'C' Department of the WUSW in Lublin containing information about the murder of 5 Ukrainians by members of the NZS branch:
On May 2, 1945 in the village of Syczyn, the Olchowiec commune of the former Chełm county the NSZ gang under the command of Walewski Eugeniusz 'Revenge' attacked the inhabitants of this village of Ukrainian nationality and killed:
1. Denis Stefan age 80,
2. Waszkiewicz Dymitr age 80.
3. Wolińska, priest’s wife age 60,
4. Lewczuk Ksenia age 50,
5. Stępniak Katarzyna age 80.
Moreover, the gang robbed property (no data on how much and what)
”.

Excerpt from Ołeksander Kolanczuk's memoirs about the murder of a dozen Ukrainians in Syczyn, probably by an NSZ unit:
Two events in May–June 1945 completely changed the life in the village  […] We could have repeated [the murder in] Wierzchowiny. This was confirmed by the possibility of murdering a dozen or so people who had not left for Ukraine, in the neighboring parish village of Syczyn”.
