Polany Surowiczne

January 25, 1946, typescript — Fragments of a report by an unknown clerk from District I of the Zakerzonya Region on the murder of the Polish Army on Ukrainians in Polany Surowiczne:
Report on the attack on Polany Surowiczne carried out by the Polish Army with the Polish gang on January 14, 1946.
14 On January 1946, a Polish gang of about 90 people attacked the village of Polany Surowiczne. At 14.30, after a close walk to the village shouting «Hurrray!» she launched herself, firing all her weapons, at the houses. There was our gunner in the village, who welcomed them with a machine gun fire, but, surrounded on all sides, he could not change his position and died.
Everyone they met on the road was put on the ground or shot at him right away, and thus: Warianka Mykola, a 40‑year‑old deacon, they shot him without even saying a word (they took off his clothes and shoes); at home they put Kaczuriak Andrij, 40, on the floor and beaten with rifle butts, cut off his nose, pricked him with bayonets and finally murdered him with a shot to the head. Then they bayoneted the pictures of saints hanging on the walls and left after [the house] was robbed. Dear Mariya, a 30‑year‑old girl, they were beating with rifles in an impossible way, stabbing with bayonets (12 holes), and finally they shot her to the head. They caught an 18‑year‑old boy named Harnaga Mykola on the road. One of the bandits knocked out all his teeth with a rifle blow. They beat the fallen on the ground with wire and sticks and finally shot them. When they were taking Powanda Stepan out of the house, his wife knelt in front of the bandit to beg mercy for her husband, and then one of the bandits shot her, killing her on the spot. Then commented:
—«There it is, it is enough for you».
After Leading away Stepan from the house, they beat him with their butts, broke his fingers, knocked out his eyes, shouting all the time:
—«Speak, motherfuckers, where is the Bandera staff office!».
They beat Czabalyk Osypa with stones, took them with them to the forest, where they murdered them, hatching their eyes earlier. Margan Stepan, 44, was found outside the village. He had a broken head, broken arms, his whole body stuck with bayonets and machine guns. Gedesz Justyna was shot by a bandit for asking him not to take her last cow, but one of the bandits said:
—«Władek, end it here, let her calm down».
With such cruelty, the bandits went through 30 houses, leaving behind them bare walls and massacred people. They escaped from the village only after hearing shots of our militia  […]
Then the gang went towards the Polish Rabbit, there was a trail of sleds, where there was a trace of blood, apparently they suffered some losses. Such people died during the attack:
Zinycz Mykhailo — 25 years old (militia shooter who came from the West);
Warianka Mykola — 40 years old;
Marhoń [Margan? — see above — BH] Stepan — 35 years old;
Napowanieć Petro — 35 years old;
Kaczuriak Andrij — 36 years old;
Harnaga Stepan — 18 years old;
Czabałyk Osyp — 17 years old;
Kochan Marija — 30 years old;
Powanda Marija — 26 years
