description

general info

Nienadowa-Świnki

Excerpt from the memoirs of Omelan Płecznia, nine years in the bunker:
Iskań was a large settlement, including the hamlets of Iskański Dół, Swynki, Lewkowo and Kopań. It was also well–armed and had the best–organized self–defense in the area  […] A guard was kept 24 hours a day so as not to be surprised by the neighbors from Polish villages  […]
A few days later [after Easter in 19456 — BH] a gang attacked the hamlet of Swynki. 'Lutyj', 'Oreł' and I were in Iskani  […] Suddenly there was a sound of knockers and a scream of people. The detectors showed the danger. Sentries came running screaming that a shooting had taken place beyond San, in Swynki. In an instant  […] the good–natured uncles turned into soldiers, in the hands of each of them a 'weapon' appeared — pitchforks, scythes, crowbars. Some hid their shotguns under the covers, but it turned out that the San cannot be crossed, the river became water and the only bridge was blown up by the Germans.
On the other side of the hamlet of Swynki, a group of armed men ran. They were heading towards the hamlet of Kruszki, where sixteen Ukrainian families lived. Shocked by our fire, the gang scattered.
When it was light, Katarzyna Hnatyk and her daughter crossed over to our side. During the attack, they hid under a fallen bridge and stayed there until dawn. They were shocked and kept saying the same thing over and over:
— «They murdered everyone, they killed them all».
In Swynki we found 17 people killed, some shot, others pierced with bayonets
