general info

Ułaszanówka

In the village of Prykordonna Ułaszanka (in the interwar period in Soviet Russia, near the Polish border), two foresters, brothers Jan and Stanisław Skałecki, were abducted by a UPA group, brutally abused, stripped of their clothes and murdered in a timber yard.

Prykordonna Ułaszanka, 1943‑1946. „The [Banderites] stood persecuting, persecuting everyone, that's where my brother Marian Sukulski was, they started beating and burning him at night. grandmother was alive, they came. We went to her with my sister:
— «Grandma, mother told you to come to us».
And she says:
— «No, come tomorrow, and I will go. The chickens crawl out, I will do everything and come tomorrow».
But tomorrow it is on fire! We were supposed to go there to take grandma, but something like this happened that my mother says:
— «You will eat dinner and you will go there. Grandma is not there yet, you will be hungry».
If we had gone, had not eaten dinner, and had gone to grandma's, they would have beaten us up there. My grandmother was such a pretty lady. She took a bundle, her clothes. She hid in raspberries, and in these raspberries they gave her 12 hits in the stomach with a knife and stabbed her.
It was already evening, everything was burning, two brothers of mine and my mother, they took horses and went away. And when they arrived — that's Grandma lying in raspberries. Grandma is no more  […]
The day comes, the Germans were already loitering. Evening, the sun has not yet set, the [Banderites] are coming. A full cart goes through the village, probably ten of them, all in black. They drove through the village in a day.
It must have been two or three days later. And here, where they burned everyone, there were two Skaleckis'. They were foresters. They (their houses) were set on fire and there was no way to live there. And they were friends with my brother. We Poles, and they will not go to the Ukrainians, but to us. We had a large apartment and they came to us, to my brother Kazik. There was one Janek, the other Stasiek. Their parents were beaten and burned by the [Banderites]. They came to us, but since they knew partisans, and were afraid, wanted to go out asap.
I remember it well, because everything is etched in my eyes. They took them, the [Banderites], out on such a road, such bushes with spikes, such trees were there. They took them there and we hear: bam, bam, bam! They were shooting them. Did they shoot them alive? They stripped off their clothes and put them on those bushes, and they were surely dragging them alive through them, because if they were dead, why drag them? It was such a vengeance. Such blood on these bushes! They beat them there, they burned them.
In the morning the neighbors say:
— «They were with you. Hide, you have to do a funeral for you».
Nobody will go, neither parents nor nobody. Who will go there, to collect what? But in the end all children and my mother went, took any available pot with us, we collected all these bones. As I remember now, there was Jozek. He had such a wide yellow belt. And his meat did not burn under that belt. He was fat. This is how the meat was parched. With these hands, we collected everything in these pots, and made one big grave, and put everything there.
Now they have raised such a big monument there. They come from Poland and take care of it all
”.
