general info

Recently, agitation among the Ukrainian population against the Polish minority has increased in our territory. This was due to the news coming here from the Volhynia area and the events taking place there, as well as the fact that strong Soviet subversive troops appeared in the local area, partially reinforced with the Ukrainian element and marched for 2 weeks. By attacking government institutions, Liegenschafts, taking cattle, horses, food, and uniforms from police stations, these units introduced a sense of impunity among the local Ukrainian population. As a result of this agitation, they were murdered according to our existing information: the wife of Ing. Kuźmiński with his 4‑year‑old daughter and Engr. Żmigrodzki with his 9‑year‑old daughter on the road from Kosmacz – Kołomyja [Kosów], and a doctor, Dr. Kaliniewicz former director of the hospital in Kołomyja, Budzianowski – prof. junior high school, and the priest of the Roman Catholic parish in Pistyń [Kosów], closer to the name unknown to us. The places where the crime was committed are unknown to us. These cases, for the time being isolated, concern the intelligentsia, but we do not know if this also applies to the settlers living in the villages. Here and there, however, you hear the calls of „Rezati Lachiv” („slaughter the Poles”). Accidents of this kind may lead to a catastrophic situation of the Polish population, especially those living in villages or smaller towns. we do not know, however, whether this also applies to the settlers living in the villages. general info

Probably in 1944: „Smarzowski tried to reach people who saw traces of Ukrainian crimes or saw the crimes with their own eyes. The film took a long time to make, it was difficult to tighten some scenes due to under–financing. In Wrocław, we had a closed meeting of the Polish Kresovians' Association with actors and the director, his assistants, where we watched the film together. For example, the scene where the Ukrainians tie the children with straw and set them on fire, the so–called mulch scene, was inspired by the experiences of my relatives – Gołasza. The Ukrainians tied them with a rope, covered them with straw, watered them with kerosene and set them on fire. People who identified bodies are still alive today. And this is a testimony – two marriages were burned alive with their children. It was not the director's invention. It really happened”.
