When the war broke out, my father was drafted into the Polish Army, to the Uhlans' regiment. Mom was left alone in the economy. Initially, relations between the neighbors were good. We lived very well next door to a Ukrainian woman whose name I do not remember. It got more and more dangerous as time went on. And so one day this Ukrainian woman came to my mother and told my mother to run away because she had heard the conversation that they would come to murder us tonight. My mother knew that this Ukrainian woman was a good woman, so she asked her to help us hide. The place of the hideout turned out to be a decayed willow tree in the woman's yard. My mother wrapped me in a duvet – I was about 2 years old then – and it was then bitter frost. She entered the willow and the Ukrainian woman put firewood around it. Since her house was a meeting place for Ukrainians, at night they would come for the willow and urinate. Mom mentioned we were all wet with urine. She was worried about me the most so that I wouldn't start crying. When it was light, we escaped to the German station, and from there the Germans escorted us to Bełżec. During the journey, the Ukrainians were shooting at us all the time.
