Żernica Wyżna

or

Żernica Niżna

The UPA murdered 53 Poles: they drowned 23 of those abducted from Lesko in the slurry; 4 families from Żernica Wyżna (16 people); 3 families from Żernica (12 people) and 2 young Poles.

J. Keller in his account to Grzegorz Motyce claims that the UPA drove 23 Poles from Lesko and buried them alive in a slurry in Żernica, while during the massacre of a small hamlet near Hoczwia, they crucified small children on the walls. Motyka states that these „accounts raise” doubts.

Żernica Wyżna

Excerpt from the situational report of an unknown OUN clerk from the Beskid region for October 1945 about the murder of the Ukrainians Domaradz Dmytro and Mychajło Biłym in Żernica Wyżna, probably by soldiers of the Polish Army:
On October 24 at 9 p.m., [unknown soldiers] came to the village of Żernica Wyżna, Sanok district to the farmer D. Domaradz, breaking the window in the stable and taking 3 horses and the servant of Mykhailo Biły, 16 years old, who was sleeping in the stable. Leaving the yard, they caught the 27‑year‑old Dmytro, son of Domaradz Tymek, near the house, returning from the village. Together with Biły they led him across the mountain towards Baligród. At a distance of 8 km from the house, they tortured Domaradz Dmytro and M. Biły and finally shot them. D. Domaradz received about 30 bullets from the PPSz machine gun and his tongue was torn off, and Biły was badly beaten and his leg was broken in three places”.

Żernica Wyżna

The UPAs kidnapped 3 Poles who went missing without a trace.
Michał Olszanicki, a gamekeeper in Żernica Wyżna near Baligród, abducted on February 14, 1947 with his brother Piotr and the village mayor by the UPA 'Chrin' sotnya, all traces of them have been lost”.

Baczyński Michał, my grandfather, was the mayor in the village of Żernica Wyżna, Hoczew commune in the Leski poviat. He was abducted on February 14, 1947 and all traces of him have disappeared. My mother was 11 years old at the time and this is how she remembered the circumstances of her father's death:
The Banderites came at night, took my father, they also wanted to take my adult brother, but he escaped through the window. The same night they also took our neighbors Piotr and Michał Olszanicki. Among the women murdered from the village of Żernica Wyżna, one named Kaśka was pregnant.
In the morning the children went to look for even a trace of where they had gone, but they were afraid to go far — they did not find a trace. In a few days, a piece of paper with hand–drawn characters with various injuries was posted on the front door. Mom remembers a clipped tongue and gouged out eyes, but there was more. This card was not allowed to be removed under the threat of death.
In a few days the Bandera followers came and took all the animals from the farm… and after the next few days they burned the house down. The family took refuge with neighbors.
In a short time, the Polish army announced two hours to leave their homes in May. They walked about 30 km to the railway station. They traveled in cattle cars with animals for 3 weeks. Lice and various diseases took hold. They never returned there again, they do not know anything about their father's fate to this day.
Maybe someone knows where my grandfather is buried? Please contact me at joloonia@wp.pl Jolanta z Baczyńskich
