general info
Zawadówka
The Banderites, marching on the outskirts of the village of Tousobaby „along the” road, murdered here 46 Poles and in the Huta Zawadowska estate 15 Poles, 61 people in total; among the victims was the 5–week–old Stanisław Skalski. „A group of volunteers from the Center for Vocational and Continuing Education from the People's Republic of Poland as part of the «The grave of ancestors save from oblivion» campaign was in Ukraine for the first time. She was assigned two cemeteries in Zawadówka and Markowa. The discovery and arrangement of the collective grave in Zawadówka, in which over 40 people were buried in 1944, was also a big challenge. The tomb was not only overgrown with trees and shrubs, but also a garbage can. Some residents did not even know that this was the burial place of murdered Poles. This place was indicated by an inhabitant of Zawadówka of Polish origin who was present at the funeral. The cemeteries differed greatly in size. The Polish cemetery in Zawadówka is small, therefore it was completely cleaned up. The cemetery in Markowa is large, spread over an area of several hectares, and it was impossible to reach all its parts in such a short period of time. For me, as the group's guardian, the cemetery in Zawadówka is particularly important, because my father's aunt and the whole family are buried in a mass grave”.
