description

general info

Zarudzie

On a winter night in 1943 or maybe 1944 (I don't remember exactly), a boy came running from the Polish colony of Zarudzie (about one kilometer) to the village of Palikrów. He was about sixteen. His family home was attacked by the Banderites. He managed to escape. He was wearing only his nightclothes. He ran on snow, which was covered with a hard icy crust. Running barefoot in the snow, he injured his feet so that he made bloody footprints. He came running and asked for help for his parents. Self–defense guards on the night watch organized a rescue. They went two ways to outflank the bandits. The action failed and the Banderites killed two Poles. They were men who escaped with their families from Volhynia from the Banderites. In the house of the Waszkiewiczs, they had a catafalque. I saw the despair of their children and wives.
