Zamostyszcze

On June 16, 1943 at 15, Jan Reszetyło with his father Andrzej, while driving a wagon on a field and forest road from Zamostyszcz towards Berezno, where the family sold meat and cold cuts, they came across a group of Ukrainians. The men immediately jumped out of the cart, each in their own direction. The older one jumped down and ran towards the grain growing by the road, the younger one to the nearest bushes, where, unfortunately, he came across another group of The Ukrainians lurking here. He was stabbed to death on the spot, as witnessed by the father who survived and returned home.

On the way to Berezne: Władysław Reszetyło, Andrzej's son, brother of Jan murdered on June 16, „a few days later, on June 21, 1943, asked a truck driver going towards Berezno for a lift. It was around 10, Władysław was driving a truck with other people (number unknown) and they were hit by a grenade. The witness was a teacher who was the only one who survived despite her torn leg. The perpetrators were the Ukrainians. The funeral took place at the Catholic cemetery in Berezne (now a city park here) – Information provided in 2003 by Jan (Władysław's son) based on the account of his mother Hermina (the wife of the killed Władysław), who lived with her family in Wołów” after the war.

After the city was seized by the [German] Wehrmacht on July 6, 1941, a pogrom took place, during which Jews were beaten and robbed. The German authorities created a ghetto for the Jewish population, which on August 25, 1942 was liquidated by the German gendarmerie and the Ukrainian police. 3,680 Jews were shot.
Until 1939, it was the town with the highest percentage of Jewish population in Poland (94.6%).
I lived in Kresy [Polish Borderlands] in Zamostyszce near Berezne, I was born there. Apart from parents, there were four children in our family: Zofia (6 years old), Jan (5 years old), Zbigniew (2 years old), Jadwiga (1 year old, when the murders prepared by our Ukrainian neighbors and colleagues began.
It was our Ukrainian neighbors who persecuted us, who earlier were friends with Poles. I won't tell you much, but I remember that my uncle went somewhere in the forest and they attacked him there.
I believe my uncle supposedly defended himself and then begged for his life. But it didn't do him any good. They murdered my uncle Jan Reszetyło in 1943. and he was then 22 years old and then we moved immediately to Berezne.
I know from the stories that my uncle was stabbed with bayonets and probably had 7 stab wounds in his chest. I only remember from my childhood that my uncle carried me in his arms. Already at his funeral, my father Władysław (25 years old) had a feeling that he would also die.
The Ukrainians in Zamostyszcze were to kill us one night, I remember that my father and mother hid at the last minute. Then the Ukrainians came home at night and I remember that we did not move in our beds and pretended to be sleeping, we were so afraid. One of these Ukrainians lifted the quilt and they were about to kill us.
But the latter took pity on us, and when he saw us all four supposedly asleep, he said to the rest: «We will come next night and kill them» and then the others listened to him and all the Ukrainians left.
If we stayed in Zamostyszczach for the second night, they would kill us all. That is why we fled to Berezne, where we lived with the Hermaszewski's family.
Many of us came here to Wołów after the war. Dad, I know that he was killed on the road from Berezne to Zamostyszcze (he was driving a car) and someone threw a grenade, that's why Dad was burnt alive in the car.
They buried them together with other passengers of the car two weeks later. I know from stories that he went to Zamostyszcze for food, for children, because all our belongings remained there.
There were a few more Poles in this car. We recognized the dead dad by the finger because he had a bandaged and wrapped finger. The bodies of several men killed in this car were very charred and burned. I remember that it was not far to the church in Berezne from our new home.
My mother's name was Hermina nee Szczygieł, and her family came from Przeworsk Sienny. My mother and my family left for Volhynia just before the First World War, they bought land there and my mother was one year old then in 1914, when my grandfather decided to settle there. They were all killed in Volhynia by the nationalists during the Second War.
I know that my mother had 3 sisters: Stefania, Bronisława, Wanda and they killed them in Volhynia. They were young girls. Those were still young girls when they were killed there. I know that they lived near Zamostyszcze.
We came here to Wołów in 1945. I remember that my sister Jadwiga was 2 years old then. Later, my grandparents and I came here and there were free flats, they were occupied by them at Polish Army [Str.].
Where the tuberculosis hospital used to be. We stayed in this hospital for "a good beginning". Then my grandfather lived at Independence Str., they were allocated there, and we were assigned to Chopin Str.
Once upon a time, it was forbidden to speak out loud about Poland beyond the Bug River and about the martyrdom of Borderlands people. After 1989, associations of Borderlanders began to spring up like mushrooms, followed by monographs documenting life in the Borderlands and Ukrainian crimes.
Thanks to witnesses who most often publish their memories on their own, the Borderlands are slowly ceasing to be a blank spot on the map of our national martyrdom  […]
I would like the names of my relatives, Jan and Władysław Reszetyło, to be etched on the commemorative plaque at the lapidarium in Berezne
