general info

Wydżgów

The Ukrainians murdered the Poles living here, several families, the number of victims has not been established. Stanisław Pałek „learned about the events of 1943 from the stories told by her relatives. One of them was cousin Amelia Steczuk, who, as a four‑year‑old girl, experienced her own death. Amelia lived with her sister Bronisława and parents in Wydżgów (Olesk commune, Włodzimierz county). At the end of August 1943, the village was finally cleared of Poles. The incident probably surprised the girls' parents while working in the fields, where they immediately hid. The daughters were either at or near the house at that time. Both daughters were to be killed by hitting the back of the head with a shovel. After the torturer was struck by the tormentor, they were thrown into the potato pits and covered with earth. After an undefined time Amelka, which was lying on the Weapon awoke and rose to the surface. Dizzy, she came to the Ukrainian farm. She lost her speech due to a head injury and shock. The neighbors hid her in the basement and informed the Poles that they had a girl who had survived. The next night a man showed up and took the baby to a safer place. With time, Amelka regained her speech but it was disturbed. Luckily her parents” also found themselves.
