I would like to pass on to your studies information about the members of the family of my mother–in–law, Halina Kaliszewska, née Kusik, murdered in Woronczyn on June 12 or 14, 1943. Three women were murdered by the Ukrainians: Rozalia Kostecka née Pawelczuk and her two adult daughters: Bronisława Kostecka and Józefa Kusik, née Kostecka, whose daughter is Halina Kaliszewska. Halina Kaliszewska was 2 at the time and was spared by the Ukrainians. We guess that she must therefore have been the d/o a Ukrainian, Grzegorz Kusik.

[The Ukrainians] murdered several Polish families, only 13 named are known. „The day has come July 15, 1943. It was a very beautiful day. The sun was quite hot. Mum (Marianna Zdzymira) was baking bread, Dad (Wincenty Zdzymira) went to the shoemaker for shoes. a Ukrainian neighbor came to borrow a horse. He tied it up against his fence. He did nothing with it. He borrowed it so that we could not leave the village. My grandfather and I went to the farm of my uncle (Władysław Zdzymira) to milk the cows. That morning, my uncle left with his family. It was during the milking that we heard the first shots. It was around 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Grandpa called: «Let's run or they'll kill us!». We ran away to grain, but we were still too close to the village and the house. Grandpa was afraid that if they set fire to the house, «would bake us up with». So we went on to the neighbor's rye, who was called Mańko. When we, frightened, sat in our life, all hell broke loose in the village. No words will tell and will not reflect the horror of those hours. The shooting was terrible. She was accompanied by the roaring of cows, the bleating of sheep, dogs howling piercingly, chickens and ducks were making a terrible noise. But the clatter was clearly showing arrows. When another one rained, we said goodbye to someone's grandfather, who was caught by the bullet. It could be anyone We Know. after all, my mother and siblings stayed in the village. I was terribly afraid. We were sitting huddled until suddenly a conversation was heard. Slowly I looked up. I saw a white horse on which a Ukrainian was sitting. a rifle was slung across his chest. He was leading a woman tied to the saddle (emphasis — S.Ż.). It was our neighbor, Krzeszczykowa”.

The author, then 15 years old, is no less tragic. The fate of the abducted „in the” Polish woman can be guessed, it was worse than the fate of the Tatar captives, and it happened in the mid–twentieth century.
