Wierzbica
Excerpt from Anna Kertyczak's memoirs about the murder of Ukrainians in Wierzbica by soldiers of the Polish Army:
„The Polish Army often attacks the countryside, people are hiding, but one time a young boy, Sławko Myśko, did not escape death. In order not to be in the village, he went with his mother into the fields to weed the cereal crops. Soldiers arrived and shot him in front of his mother, disregarding his mother's pleas”.

My brother Mykyta died in the same way. He came back from work in Germany in 1945, had for some reason written 'P' in the Kennkarte. On May 22, the boys took the horses out to the pasture during the summer festival of St Michael. Soldiers came, fired a machine gun burst from a distance, thinking perhaps that they were shooting at the Commie–Nazi UB member”.

Wierzbica
The UPA murdered a Polish Army soldier. „Just before midnight on June 15, the battalion command found out that Corporal Puto had been killed or seriously wounded in Wierzbica. Report was given by his colleague, who accompanied him on an evening 'trip' to this village, on an agreed date. He said that while the corporal was talking to the girl, he was sitting some distance under an apple tree where he fell asleep. He was awakened by the girl's scream.
— «No, oh God, no!».
He grabbed the gun, but the corporal was already lying on the ground, and the two attackers were dragging the girl into the buildings. It was too late and it was dangerous so he withdrew. Before midnight he reached Uhnów and reported everything to the platoon commander.
On June 16, 1947, in accordance with the order, troops encircled the village and hid. Just before dawn, a group of men approached the bridge over Solokija river from the village side. The patrol commander guarding the bridge asked:
— «Stop. Who is going?»
They stopped, and one of them fired a burst with a submachine gun. The soldiers responded with a series of firearms. One of the group fell, the others scattered and retreated to the village.
From the side of the border, Russian border guards started to illuminate their area with missiles. After about half an hour, a cannonade ensued and lasted a long time. An unrecognized UPA unit tried to get out of the encirclement, on the opposite side of the village, but had to turn back under the fire of soldiers. The soldiers, however, could not follow because the area was open, there was no cover, and from the village side, shots were fired from behind buildings, hedges and other covers; machine guns were fired from the church tower.
After some time, the Polish Army soldiers neutralized the firing point on this tower. During this exchange of shots, smoke and flames appeared, which spread rapidly over the straw–covered buildings. Residents ran out of their homes to save their property. The commander of the Polish Army gave the order to stop the firing; Wierzbica was being consumed by a fire.
After about three hours, designated platoons of the Polish Army entered the village. Searches of houses and their backyards as well as inspection of the ruins did not bring any results — the weapons were not found, and neither were the suspects and victims of the shootings. The inhabitants were gathered — women and children separately and men separately. When asked who was shooting, everyone was silent, only one of the elderly men said:
— «You don't know who? – damned guerrillas».
Evening — June 16, 1947, the army left Wierzbica but did not leave the area. The next day the regiment commander came and demanded evidence: where are the Banderites, where are the weapons? He threatened the battalion commander that if he did not present proof that there were 'UPA' in the village, he would put him on trial for burning Wierzbica. The soldiers undertook a more detailed search. Suddenly, one of the soldiers noticed the change and, pointing with his hand, said to his friend:
— «Yesterday there were embers here in the barn, today is a pit, go get the platoon commander».
After removing the ashen layer, the charred beams of the bunker ceiling appeared, in which twenty–two, armed dead men were found. Two more such shelters were soon found, and in each of them the corpses of men with weapons. In the last one, among the bodies of armed men, a body in a Polish uniform was discovered — it was Corporal Puto; his head was smashed with an ax.
I do not know the cause of death of 62 (according to another version 72) armed men, whose bodies were found in three bunkers in Wierzbica. Various rumors circulated In Uhnów: that they hid under pressure from the inhabitants to avoid the extermination of the village, others that the fire cut off their way out of the bunkers, others that they committed mass suicide?
There was no mention of the casualties among the population because they were not there. Corporal Puto was buried in the Uhnów cemetery. I attended this funeral with other students of my and other classes of Uhniv Primary School'”.
