Wojtkowa

Excerpt from the report of Volodymyr Choma 'Karło', the interrogation of Ivan Domkowicz on July 20, 1945 by the clerk of the SB OUN District III in the 'Chłodny Jar' area, about the murder of the arrested Ukrainians from the surrounding villages by members of the MO post in Wojtkowa:
The main organizer of the pogrom in the Ukrainian village of Leszczawa was a Roman Catholic priest in Seńkowa [Nowosielc Kozicki] named Ryczan. His efforts led to the order of the militia to destroy the commemorative crosses on the graves. He demanded that for one [killed] Polish woman from Leszczawa Dolna all arrested Ukrainians be shot at the militia in Wojtkowo. The commander of the militia in Wojtkowo put all the prisoners in a row and ordered the policemen to shoot. Since nobody wanted to shoot, he shot them all himself”.

1945 April 9 — Fragment of the report of the interrogation of the arrested Franciszek Trabenda, a policeman from the MO in Wojtkowa  […] :
Question: — «You were arrested for taking part in the looting and murder of the Ukrainian population in the villages of Leszczawa Górna and Grąziowa, tell about your activities».
Answer: — «I did not take part in the robberies and killings together with the militia in the above–mentioned villages. I was assigned at the Wojtkowa village station to protect commandant Zarański».
Q: — «The investigating authorities know that several people were killed at the Wojtkowa village station. Tell me who were they and who killed them?»
A: — «Yes, six Ukrainians were killed at the Wojtków station. Three of them were shot by the commandant, the rest by the police — that is us. I do not know the names of the shot people».
Q: — «Since when have you been working as a policeman at the Wojtków station?»
A: — «I have been working as a policeman at the police station since November 1944».
Q: — «How many times did you go out into the field to plunder the Ukrainian population?»
A: — «I left many times with the commandant of the police station or with the militiamen themselves in order to collect taxes from the Ukrainians. We were taking horses, cows, grain and clothing».
Q: — «If you were collecting only from the Ukrainians, it was probably not taxes, but ordinary plunder of the population?»
A: — «Yes, indeed, we only collected from Ukrainians, that is, we robbed them. We took some of our belongings to Przemyśl, and the rest we took for ourselves»
”.

The UPA attacked a MO station and killed 15 policemen and 20 civilian Poles.

Others: „In Wojtkowej, September 29, 1945, burlaki «Burłaki» and «Łastiwki», which had their bases in nearby villages, attacked the local MO station and the Commune Board. after a long fight, the post was captured and burned. E. Ginalski reports that 15 militiamen and 20 peasants were killed in the UPA raid under the command of Jarosław Hamiłka (probably an NKVD agent who was then an economic clerk for the OUN district). Witold Garbarczyk wrote in his memoirs that 35 Poles, including 5 militiamen, were killed during the attack. In Ukrainian reports, the date of the attack is sometimes given for September 28, 1945. according to other sources, the Bandera followers abducted the commander of the MO post, and a platoon deputy. They shot Wilczek. Moreover, they shot 6 Polish inhabitants of Wojtkowo and burned down all the buildings. In turn, other Ukrainian reports say that on September 28, 1945, the sotnya «Burlaki» attacked Wojtkowo. 12 militiamen were killed and 2 were taken to the forest. Moreover, 7 inhabitants of villages of Polish nationality were murdered. The buildings of the MO post, post office and many rural buildings were burned down. The Banderites obtained over a dozen firearms, a lot of ammunition and the archives of the MO. The policemen were probably secret soldiers of the disbanded Home Army AK Group «Warta». The situation was so serious that on September 30, as a result of pleas from several men who had come for help after the murder and burning of the village, 3 tanks with troops and 60 mounted soldiers from Sanok arrived. In the evening, the soldiers returned to Sanok, fearing the attack. Wojtkowa was abandoned. Ukrainian inhabitants of the village fled to the forest. On the way back, on the other side of the hill behind Nowosielce Kozickie, from Ropienka and Wańkowa, the Bandera followers attacked the retreating soldiers of the Polish army. The attackers retreated after a short fight”.

In the letter correspondence with me, Mr. Tadeusz Markowicz stated that there was one UPA raid on the MO station in Wojtkowo, on September 29, 1945. Four militiamen were killed during this attack. He also said that the UPA transported the head of the school, Mr. Lachowicz, in a cart towards Tura (Wojtkowa hamlet), who had never returned.
