The Ukrainians murdered 5 people from the Uleryk family. „In the Polish partisans of the Home army, I met two Uleryk hives: Stanisław, about 22 and Edward, about 20, they told me then the great tragedy of their immediate family in Dominopol, which they experienced personally, they said: «Our dad and our two sisters went to throw hay in a meadow located in the middle of the village of Dominopol and since then no trace of them has been found. Meanwhile, we realized that there was an attack on Dominopol and we fled to the city of Włodzimierz Wołyński. Here we lived with our family in the suburbs, on Lotnicza Street. Unfortunately, the Ukrainian bandits did not leave us alone because one night they attacked our family again and this time they managed to kill our mother and our younger brother. We both managed to jump out of the house through a window during the attack and so miraculously managed to save ourselves»”.

Włodzimierz Wołyński
At the Polish police station, my father met this man whose life he had saved in Kohylno. I think his name was Krawiec, he was a Pole, he lived somewhere further east, today, unfortunately, I do not remember the town he came from. From what I realized, however, he was on his way to Włodzimierz for a week. He said that he had a wife and two children, they lived in a Polish village where he was a shoemaker. During the war, Ukrainian partisans commissioned him to make new shoes for himself, for Ukrainian officers. He had a lot of work to do with it, so he was needed and when all the Poles around were murdered, only his family was saved by the Ukrainians so far. Anyway, they did not hide it from him, they said straightforwardly: „You are innocent, those we beaten were guilty because they had weapons and were associated with the partisans, so they had to die. You will live, you will work and you will make our shoes”. After a few days, they came again to pick up that batch of shoes he had already made. At the same time, they ordered him to kill his wife, who was Polish, because they suddenly found her to blame. At the same time, they urged him to join them, to become one of them. The tailor turned out to be human and did not want to kill his wife, he insisted that he could not do it. Then they themselves murdered in the house in front of him his wife and his children, all hacked with axes. Then they had him clean the bodies in their presence and wash the pool of blood off the floor. After obeying his instructions, he buried the bodies. Then he started making shoes for his tormentors again, all the time planning his escape. He had scarcely any doubts that as soon as he had done his job, he'd be sorted out too.

Kazimierz Sidorowicz: „Bolesław Roch sometimes told me his experiences after the war, during his stay in Polish self–defense in Włodzimierz, he said: «In the summer of 1943, the Ukrainians attacked the suburbs of Włodzimierz, they approached the city from the village side ‹Cold›. At one point, it was even possible to suppose, after the intensification of the fighting and the onslaught of attackers, that they were even trying to break in and capture Vladimir. However, they did not succeed, as Samoobrona put up a strong resistance to the partnership with Germany. A fierce fight ensued, losses were increasing rapidly on both sides, we finally gave the resuns (Eng. butchers) a decent beating up»”.

In the suburbs, the UPA attacked a house with a large group of Poles – refugees and set it on fire, about 30 people were killed. „In Włodzimierz, ul. Lotnicza, in December 1943, Mr. Lecki with his wife and two children lived next to the house of Mr. Kalińczuk, there was also a maid there. The Ukrainians who came at night, who were in the service of the Germans, wore navy blue uniforms. They brutally killed Mrs. Lecka and the maid because they caught them in bed, only the children escaped by escaping through the kitchen window, Kazimierz aged 11 and Marysia, aged 8. During the escape, the boy was injured with a bayonet in the frame when he was already in the window, they ran to our house and told terrified of what happened. When they heard mum screaming, they started to run away. We immediately ran to Mr. Ilniecki, who lived on the other side of our house. It was a host – a farmer. Immediately he put straw on the cart, harnessed the horses and drove to Mrs. Lecka's house with help. The men entered the house and carried her body on the sheets, put her on the wagon and took her hooves to the hospital. Several men escorted her, but there was no one to save, the poor woman had a lot of bayonets. Mrs. Lecka's husband was on duty that night, he worked as a guard of” weapons warehouses for the Germans.

After some Poles escaped from Mohylno to Włodzimierz Wołyński, the UPA decided to catch them there as well. „They bribed the Germans with a delivery of cold cuts, moonshine and money, who on an agreed day and at a certain time gave them the entire Lotnicza Street […] at that time, the Bandera followers, who came to Lotnicza Street with a huge amount of sleighs, dragged Poles along its entire length. They tied captured people and arranged them like sheaves on a sleigh. There were crying and complaining. They groaned while tied to the sledge. There were at least 30 sleds, five to ten people each. Poles digging trenches asked the Germans what was going on. The Germans replied that nothing would happen to them. Finally, with the total indifference of the Germans, the terrifying rolling stock departed. The Bandera followers did not murder anyone in their presence. apparently that was the agreement between them. None of the people taken from Lotnicza Street that day never returned. We got to know the fate of the UPA thanks to the account of kuma Panasiewicz, my mother's godmother. She kept coming to us to Włodzimierz and thanks to her we know what happened next. already when leaving the city, some Poles were tied to a sled by their heads or by their legs and dragged all the way to Mohylno. among other things, Mrs. Langowa was seen dragged behind a sled, tied by her neck. In Mohylno, the murderers went to great lengths to cause the victims as much suffering as possible. quartered, impaled, burned alive and skinned. Panasiewiczowa spoke about it with pain, during the massacre she prayed for the victims dying in torment. «It was terrible, my heart ached from this cruelty, this abuse of Poles»”.

Some of the torturers are known, including: Volodymyr Smolensky, Marczuk, Kalińczuk. „It is February 1944, our boys from the police stations went to Bielin to join the Polish partisans. Meanwhile, The Ukrainians are coming to Włodzimierz, the German has given them back their weapons, and they are ordered to report their weapons once a week. The German strives for grain from the Ukrainians, but they are afraid of Poles from the city. One day a German was walking around the houses and ordering the trenches to be cleared of snow. The brother went and the boys from the Mirowski family. My parents went to town, Jadzia is reading something in her room, Mrs. Mirowska is sick in bed. Mr. Mirowski and his wife's brother went to Mr. Ilnicki. I wanted something very much for my mother, I was wondering why she still doesn't come back from the city, maybe I was also hungry. So I went all the way to the street and I look towards the city, I look like my parents. But I noticed something What interested me was a German in uniform from the city side, and two civilians with him. They go from apartment to apartment anyway, sometimes crossing the street. Once they were close to our house, I ran to the porch and watched what happens. and they are following the path to our house, and at that moment I meet a Ukrainian from Mohylno. I rush into my apartment and shout: «Jadziu is coming to see us anenku Sergey». He was Jadzia's neighbor, maybe 23 years old. Jadzia quickly closed the door with an iron bar, similarly to the entrance to the room where Mrs. Mirowska stayed, but they broke in so much that in the end the bar did not help. at home, they started banging on to the room where Mrs. Mirowska was staying. at this time we jump into the garden through the window and run as fast as we can to Mr. Ilnicki, and there is a peasant standing there, everyone has a fork and a spade in his hand. They kidnapped Polish boys and led them to Cegielnia, and there they were brutally murdered, even women they were kidnapped. and the German would go around the houses that if someone had a document that he was working for the Germans or that he was a burgher, he forbade to take him to the Brickyard. and if someone was, like us, refugees from villages, this German would agree to be taken, as it turned out later, for extermination. It was around 1 p.m. when my parents and the Mirowski family returned from town, we told what happened. We immediately started packing everything on the cart and we set off for Bielin, to our boys. Winter, a lot of snow, and we do not have a sled, only a cart. I must explain that the brother of Mirowski's wife is Józef Gaczyński from Mohylno”. .

Włodzimierz Wołyński
Barbara Szczepuła reports: „Helena Sawicka, together with her father and priest Kobyłecki, is escaping from the city, her eyes have images of burning farms, in her ears screams of killed people, sounds of shots. She pushes the horses, the sister riding the cart in the back yells something at her, but in this tumult you cannot hear a word, the whole caravan, perhaps twenty wagons from Włodzimierz Wołyński, is rolling westwards in pursuit of Poland, which is moving there […] The end of July, the sun is burning, dust, the carts are stuck in the sand, screams, calls, confusion, and the girl's piercing voice breaks through everything. Where did the girl come from? One day she was found dirty, hungry, in a torn dress, wandering around the area. Someone brought her to an orphanage in the rectory. Such children who managed to survive, because they ran away in time, they buried themselves in a haystack, hid in corn, crouched like a hare under the copper, hid themselves in lilacs, fell flat in wheat, managed to run into the forest and throw themselves among the bushes – there was a lot in Volhynia. Children speechless with terror because they saw something that a man should never see. What did the girl see? What was she going through? She did not speak. Only sometimes she would utter a piercing, inarticulate scream: Aaa. And then the hearts of those who heard it squeezed. The dogs curled their tails. The birds went silent. The nuns prayed the rosary more earnestly. People locked in barns, churches and houses were burning alive. This one had his tongue cut off, the other had his eyes gouged out, his stomach was cut open, the fetus was pulled out, someone was cut with a saw, little children were smashed against walls. It's her tragic: Aaa;. it pierced the air, it flew high up to heaven, begging God for mercy. But God was looking the other way, and people could not help her, because how to help a twelve‑year‑old girl whose parents and siblings had probably been cruelly murdered before her eyes? Mrs. Helena Szczepkowska, when telling me about the girl, lowers her head, sees her again in this cart of hers, although she no longer remembers what hair she had, probably dark braids, and completely empty, black eyes, in which there was nothing but despair. She closed it inside herself and slammed the door to the world. She was speechless with pain, as petrified as Niobe […] The father of Irenka, with whom Helena went to school, was a lineman and had a house by the railroad tracks on the outskirts of the city. The UPA came in at night. What did the girl see? What was she going through? She did not speak. Sometimes she just made a piercing, inarticulate scream: Aaa. And then the hearts of those who heard it squeezed. The dogs curled their tails. The birds fell silent. The bodies of grandma, grandfather, mother, father, Irenka, her sisters and brothers were found the next day. They all died the same: torn by the legs. – Ah; the girl on the cart shouts, as if she knew what Helenka was thinking about, as if she saw the tearing, as if she heard the screams of the victims […] In August, Zosia gives birth to a healthy son, Antoni, together with the First Polish Army, heads towards Berlin. Meanwhile, Helena leaves a girl with the nuns in Zamość, whose tragic scream shakes the world, and, rushing her horses, continues through the war–torn lands”.
