The UPA and Ukrainian peasants murdered 20 Polish families, at least 80 Poles (counting 4 people per family). Witness Leokadia Ciaś – Tylenda reports that her father Jan and 3 brothers (Stanisław, Tadeusz and Lucjan, 12 years old) were murdered on September 3, 1943.

[The Ukrainians] stabbed 10 Poles with bayonets and threw them into a ditch with water. One of these „Ukrainian insurgents” was a young Ukrainian woman, who stabbed the elderly Głowiński with a bayonet with great ferocity.

Everything was cold and crowded. Some refugees made trips to abandoned farms to get fodder, but most often it ended badly for them. I remember that one of those who dared to leave for fodder was a certain Antoni Spadek from Wierzbin. The Banderites caught him and murdered him. It was in such an atmosphere that everyone prepared in Zasmyki for Christmas and the traditional Christmas Eve.
