general info
Toustobaby
The Banderites, in the strength of about 500 attackers, with axes, forks, knives, bayonets, burning them alive, etc., murdered 82 Poles, and robbed and burned their farms. The moment was used when about 30 armed men left the village to get wood from the lodge. After surrounding Toustobab, the attackers started firing incendiary missiles at the buildings, causing fires of thatched huts. Then they stormed between the houses and started murdering the Poles they encountered, regardless of their sex and age. They were killed by shooting, burning alive and with the use of axes, forks and other household tools. There have been cases of torture (skinning, scalping). In addition, the attackers began robbing property, including inventory. Polish civilians rushed to flee; also IB members began to withdraw towards the church, as a result, about 250 people took refuge. The UPA attacked the church several times, but they were repulsed by the defenders. The assault lasted until 1 am, when Soviet troops arrived from the direction of Monasterzyska to help the Poles, which resulted in the withdrawal of the UPA. A pursuit followed, culminating in the capture of 40 of them, including 2 company commanders who were hanged. At least 82 Poles died in Toustobaba, including 16 IB soldiers. The UPA attack on Toustobaby was part of a larger operation – at the same time the nearby villages of Zawadówka, Korzowa and Zawałów were attacked. „I especially remember the images of the martyrdom of Jan Zarzycki, a 17‑year‑old boy with his head cut in half, as well as of Czerwiński and Jan Tracz with their tongues cut out, who were later killed with rifle butts or pegs. I also remember a 2–3‑year‑old little boy from the Czerwiński family (he was 2‑year‑old Stanisław Czerwiński – comment by: Stanislaus Żurek) from whom the torturer skinned alive. It was done by a Ukrainian named Stepan Choptij”.

On December 22, 1944, 82—93 people, including women and children, were murdered in Toustobaba.
