description

general info

Tarnawa Wyżna

[The Ukrainians] murdered 10 Poles, including 5 people from Alojzy Wiluszyński's family: „The next night in the morning (that is already on 17th 1944) I secretly returned home. I had to be as careful as possible because people knew about my activities, and I was a Pole. The view I found was terrifying. All my family was left with only blood stains and my house was plundered and robbed. I have never found the bodies of my closest relatives, taken to the nearby gorges. My family's parents, Michał and Emilia, sister Ewa, sister Stefania and her husband Jan Kochaniec, died. This brutal murder was carried out by a militia under the command of Ivan Szwed (a former corporal of the Polish Army of Ukrainian nationality, residing in Tarnawa Niżna). The Greek Catholic pope, Iwan Iwanio, Tarnawa Wyżna Parish was complicit in the crime. Pop guaranteed my family safety (his son Josef, a graduate of the Lviv Polytechnic University, was in the leadership of the UPA staff). Pop thus lulled our vigilance and set my family to death. Let me mention that Ivan Szwed, with the help of the Ukrainian police, liquidated the Jewish population in the Roztoki — Borsuczyny gorge (Alojzy Wiluszyński, Warsaw 2009)”.
