description

general info

Szpickiery

[In a place known as Szpickiery n. Smrek] the UPA gang of „Wesely” sotnya murdered 7 Poles: grandparents and 5 grandchildren, which they put on pegs in the fence. Mieczysław Halik, a policeman, remembered that two other Polish families lived somewhere on one of the hills. „When we fell to the edge of the clearing, we saw one of the bandits literally hammering one of the pegs on which clay pots are normally hung in the countryside, a little girl. Four other children had died in a similar manner, and two old men caring for the children lay with their heads smashed. Two children were not yet two years old. The girl, the last to be driven on the stake, was still conscious and was opening her face twisted in pain, as if to ask for something, but only great tears streamed down her cheeks. A moment later, she also lost consciousness, her head dropped and her hair covered her tormented face”.

There were two residential buildings in Szpickiery [n. Smrek], including a forester's lodge by the Bystry stream, inhabited by a forester, Ludwik Masłyk.
