Stupnica Polska

[The Ukrainians] abducted and murdered 6 Poles. „Karol Samojedny (01.1921–25.04.1944). Murdered by the UPA – he was 23 years old. s/o Jan Samojedny (1860–1935) and his third wife Rozalia née Kamińska (1895–1976), born in Stupnica Polska. In defense of the population and farms in Stupnica Polska, a branch of CIVIL SELF–DEFENSE was established, which was to watch over the safety of the population, especially at night. On the night of 24/25. On 04. 1944 he was on a night watch, he was captured by Ukrainian banders from the UPA and taken to a clearing near the forest. There he was beaten, abused and killed. At the scene of the crime, only traces of blood remained, the buttons on his jacket and the flashlight he had with him. The body was never found!”.

Leszek was killed when she was simply returning across the field from Sambor. Michał Dranowski died – the father of Stefka Dranowska, a friend of my grandmother, who, years later, also ended up in Wałbrzych (irony of fate: after the death of her father, Stefka married a Ukrainian). Józef Pajdzik (some distant grandmother's uncle, uncle of Florek Pajdzik) was killed. Ziomek died (Ziomek is a surname, but in fact – he was the godfather of one of my grandfather's brothers, Herman Ziomek's father). He had a broken leg (a souvenir from his work with kerosene in Borysław). He must have had a conflict with the Ukrainians, because they beat him in a terrible way: they smashed his whole body with bayonets or knives so that he was left with only pulp. The guy even had a rifle, but he didn't even try to defend himself – maybe he was completely dumbfounded with fear. Grandma says she remembers that day to this day. Everyone in the village was terrified they were stunned and just waiting for the moment when it would be necessary to escape into the rye. Karol Samojeden, a poor, weak boy, died together with Ziomek. Grandma remembers that he was very religious and always prayed fervently in the church. He limped hard on one leg, so there was no way to run away.
