general info

Średnia Wieś

The UPA kidnapped 12 Poles to the forest near Baligród, of whom 11 were hacked with axes and Roman Gryziecki managed to escape them. „The next mass murder was carried out by the UPA «partisans» on July 10, 1944. They abducted 12 Poles from Srednia Wieś: father and two brothers Gryziecki, two brothers Gefert, M. Kucharek, J. Podgórski, T. Sobik, A. Bóbr, M. Materna, Gorlicki and Michnowicz. They chased them through Bereska and Żernica to the forest towards Baligród. Here they saw the bodies of ten men hanged on barbed wire. Roman Gryziecki made an attempt to escape. Despite the fact that he was injured by 7 bullets, he reached the grazing horse and, jumping on it, reached Hoczew. The UPA murdered the Poles from Middle Wieś with axes. A few months later, at the end of the year, the location of their graves was established. They were indicated by a resident of Żernica Wyżna, who buried the victims in a pit for a potato mound, in the top of the village near the forest. The UPA rewarded him with the shoes of one of the murdered. Two more graves were discovered nearby. One of them contained the bodies of three families: men, women and children. Adults were shot and children were hanged. The second grave contained the bodies of two young men. Their hands were tied back with barbed wire. They were tortured and buried alive. Four Polish families lived in Żernica Wyżna. They were murdered by the UPA. The exhumed bodies were buried in a mass grave in the cemetery in Średnia Wieś”.

IPN historian Artur Brożyniak gives the date of the murder on July 30, 1944 – and he is probably right, because Poles were kidnapped after the mass in the church; July 10 fell on Tuesday, July 30 was Sunday.
