Mieczysława Kotowska, [nee Bugajewska, today] 86‑year‑old resident of Pyrnik [recalls the escape from Soszniki colony:]
Around midnight, a messenger on horseback was rushing towards our house, which stood just off the road. He stopped and knocked on the window.
«Run away, because it is on fire in Urzan, they are already there».
We looked that way and saw a great glow. Mom awakened everyone in a moment. I remember there was a tablecloth on the kitchen table and my mom grabbed this tablecloth and stood there. She didn't know what to do.
«Where will–we run away?» She began to ask loudly.
They packed us onto the cart. We were no longer going along the main path to the road, but by a side one, to the river, escaping towards Wyrka. But dad [Bugajewski] and my uncle returned to let the cattle, horses, mare, beautiful foal from the stable, which we had, out  […]
We just managed to escape and our apartment was already on fire. Such incendiary arrows flew into the straw and in an instant everything was on fire. Maybe three quarters of an hour have passed since we left  […]
There was a pear trea in the field, tall, we turned to the right to cross the river, more like a stream. But the reins turned into the wheels and the cart got stuck in the water
”.
[Report] by Jadwiga Sznajder, née Brzozowska, about the escape from Soszniki that night, [published elsewhere, clarifies]:
The wagon got stuck in a ditch and the reins wrapped around the wagon's wheels causing the horses' ligaments to be pulled down, the situation was becoming dire, and there was no knife to cut the strong leather reins or unwrap them from the wheel. Then, as Dad said, he managed to tear the reins with superhuman effort and the horses pulled the cart out of the quagmire, we were saved”.
The Brzozowski’s belong to the Bugajewski family, they probably escaped together. Grandfather Brzozowski also ran away with them, both J. Sznajder and Mrs. Mieczysława mention it. But the grandfather decided to return home for a while. And it was a fatal decision.
Grandpa remembered that he had gold hidden under the threshold. He went back. He was already raising the threshold to pick It up, leaned to get it but the Ukrainians were already there and grabbed him. And they murdered him”.
[…] They learned about their grandfather's death a day later from their neighbors.
