general info
Sienkiewiczówka
Samoobrona, expecting an attack by the UPA, decided to evacuate about 1,000 refugees and residents of the settlement to Lutsk. The evacuation route was about 40 km. The convoy was attacked many times by UPA groups, repulsed by self–defense forces and Germans under the Kreislandwirt Leopold Hampel. This Sudeten German was captured by the Russians during World War I and, after escaping, he received help from the Poles. He knew the Polish language and showed exceptional favor towards Poles. Hampel issued a firearms license to a group of Poles, which allowed to create a self–defense in Sienkiewiczówka. Hampel's attitude sparked complaints from The Ukrainians to his superiors, as a result of which he was transferred to Vinnitsa in the Żytomierszczyzna.
