Sielce
My uncle and I escaped from Mielnica before the harvest. My whole family stayed in Sielce. News came that they were no longer there, that they were dead. And from spring to harvest they slept in meadows, crops and forests. There were no more Poles in the surrounding villages. And my father and brother Władysław were forced by the Ukrainians to collect grain. After the harvest, the Poles were no longer needed. A sentence was passed on the inhabitants of the Sielce colony, but someone warned them. Several families, forty in all, came together on this last day of life. Mom told how they escaped. They left the house at dusk, whoever could take the luggage in his hand. My mother was carrying a one‑year‑old brother Czesław and she led her four‑year‑old sister Janina. They left the house, leaving the horse, cows, poultry, a dog on a chain, only the cat following them. It was already very dangerous, so they walked through meadows, swamps and swamps. In such marshy meadows, the Banderites shot at a group of escapees at night. The group of escapees included the Gruszko family of eight, who followed a different path. After some time, the massacred corpse of the entire Gruszek family was brought back. A priest from Powórsk organized a funeral in which a group of survivors took part.
