Pyszówka

The Banderites and Ukrainian peasants from nearby villages robbed and burned 40 Polish farms and presbyteries, and murdered over 100 Poles and 7 Jews they were hiding. „A representative of the inspection organization in Sądowa Wisznia [Jaworów] informed us about the following incidents of Ukrainian terror. On April 7, 1944, around 9 p.m., an armed Ukrainian group of several thousand people surrounded the Polish group Pyszówka (7 km from Krakowiec) and set it on fire with hand grenades. The people escaping from the burning houses were shot with automatic weapons. Out of the total number of 300 people living in Pyszówka, about 100 died, the rest managed to escape to Krakowiec and, having obtained rail passes, left the San River in the vicinity of Przeworsk – Rozwadów”.

7.IV. Pyszówka near Krakowiec, a great attack on a Polish village. Out of about 300 inhabitants, only about 80 were to survive, the rest were to be murdered.

On April 6, 1944, Holy Thursday, Father Władysław Kokoszka from Krakow came to our church in Pyszówka to celebrate Holy Mass and make Easter confession. He confessed for a long time, because there were a lot of people, the atmosphere in the village was tense due to the threatening danger from the Ukrainians, who at that time committed a series of attacks and murders in the area. On that day, a Ukrainian acquaintance informed Józef Heleniak about an attack on our village being prepared. Our parents, remembering the warnings, put all our three siblings (Maria, then 12, and my brothers Frank, 9, Janka, 8, and Staś, 2, to sleep in a brick chamber). I closed the door well and we fell asleep. We were awakened by arrows and flashes of fire. After a short while we heard screams and pounding on the door of our chamber. We sat quietly curled up and cuddled to each other. Then there was silence. In a moment we felt the sharp stench of smoke that was squeezing into our chamber. The situation was becoming more and more dangerous, the smoke bit us in the eyes and suffocated us, we couldn't stand it anymore. I struggled to open the door. We jumped out of the smoky chamber into the yard. The barn has already collapsed and burned down. Our brick building with the chamber was on fire. There was no one around. I stood helpless with a group of children not knowing what to do. I decided to go to our Ukrainian neighbor in Mielniki, his name was Iwan Hradowy. I took the youngest Staś in my arms and we went across the fields barefoot in shirts. At his place, a woman gave us soup, but I was afraid she might be poisoned. When it was already light, Hradowy returned home. He told me: „Your mom is dead”. We returned to our yard.

In the nineties it was found that no trace of Pyszkowka remained. There is no sign at the place where about 60 victims of the murder, inhabitants of the village, murdered in April 1944, are buried. The victims are waiting for their funeral and the sign of the cross at their final resting place.

Myrosław Onyszkewycz „Orest Karat” gave the order: „I order you to purge your area immediately from the Polish element and Ukrainian–Bolshevik agents. The purge should be carried out in riverside hostels sparsely populated by Poles. To this end, create a militia near the area, composed of our members, whose task would be to eliminate the above–mentioned. Our larger hostels will be cleared of this element by our military units even in broad daylight  […] The clearing of the area must be completed before our Easter so that we can celebrate it without Poles. Remember that when the Bolsheviks find us with Poles in our territory, they will slaughter us all  […] Make a hard, ruthless fight with them. Not to spare anyone, even in mixed marriages. To take Lachs out of their houses, but The Ukrainians and children in these houses should not be liquidated  […] Get the gun. Death to the Poles. Stop, April 6, 1944. Glory to the heroes! Orest, Karat” This order is in the files of the investigation against Myroslav Onyshhevych.
