On the border of Siemianówka and Pustomyt, Ukrainian friends murdered the Surmiak family on the night of May 20–21, 1944. First, 80‑year‑old Antoni Surmiak was stabbed with a knife, when he left the apartment as needed, leaving the apartment open. Józef Surmiak and his pregnant wife Julia were murdered in the apartment. The woman who pleaded for mercy, saying she came from a Ukrainian family, was particularly harassed. Another victim was Maria Surmiak, who recognized the attackers and called them by name. Hidden children heard it, and later reported the murder. Another victim was Stefania Surmiak née Wojciechowski, who was seriously injured and died of blood loss. Dying, she calmed down three‑year‑old Zofia, who was still hidden in bed. Stanisław Surmiak, s/o Wojciech, also died. After the murder, the attackers set fire to two Polish farms in Pustomyty. The criminals were condemned by a Greek Catholic priest during the funeral of the victims in the cemetery in Pustomyy.

[The Ukrainians] murdered 3 Poles, Kocuła with her daughter and a carter. „The murderers went to the church in Leśniowice, demanding a blessing. A local Greek Catholic priest refused to do so. He fell to his knees in front of them, telling them that further deliberate murders in Pustomytes should begin with him. This attitude of the clergyman cooled the murderous zeal of the attackers and probably saved further, potential victims”.
