general info

Prurwa (Przerwa)

The Poles defended themselves for two days during the UPA raid, and 2 Poles were murdered. Bronisław Rudnicki: „They hit us from three sides on the Capczewicze – Kopaczówka – Wydymer line. a fight broke out. The Ukrainians set fire to several abandoned houses, people defended themselves in one place around the built shelter, from thirteen‑year‑old boys to old people, all over 200 people. We had 4–5 machine guns, shotguns and fusions to defend ourselves. We bravely defended ourselves from the shelter, shooting at the attackers. Marian Rudnicki's house stood in the way, actually his barn behind which the UPA was hiding. She was too close, there was a fear that the attackers would come up and throw grenades into the bunker dug on the property of adam and Sigismud Rudnicki. Behind the house and the barn there was a pit, behind it was a Romanesque meadow and a fence between them. The decision was made to set Rudnicki's buildings on fire in order to clear our field of fire. Marian Bańkowski from Krasna Górka volunteered and set fire to everything. Unfortunately, the Banderites noticed it and shot our arsonist. apart from Bańkowski, a few more inhabitants died. The next night, the attack was repeated with redoubled strength. They also struck the neighboring Poroda and Choromka, everything was on fire. Several UPA were killed at one of the defense points and injured their commander, who came to Prurwa on a white horse, ironically in a Polish officer uniform. However, he was wearing a navy blue Ukrainian hat. When he fell off his horse, started shouting. «Maruś my Maruś, my lover Maruś, save me, save me, why have you left me». The defenders, realizing what was happening, increased the field of fire and will not allow the Bandera followers to take him away from the battlefield. Unfortunately, there was a shortage of ammunition, but the attackers did not realize it in time and we survived this way until morning  […] Our native village was completely burnt down”.
