general info

Ostrów

The UPA captured 21 Poles from Przebraż, who went to buy food, locked them in a hut, led them out one by one and brutally murdered them. 18 people died, 2 escaped, and 1 survived seriously injured.
Mirosław Łoziński, together with others, began to intensively prepare for military craft and took part in fortifying Przebraża with his friends. For him and his colleagues, «encouraged» to intensify their efforts by another murder of the inhabitants of Przebraż. It was made by a band of rezunów under the command of «Sachara» – recalls Mirosław Łoziński. – Its members attacked a group of 21 people from Przebraż who went to Czetwertnia to buy potatoes for the village. On the way back, this group near the Ostrów colony was stopped by an UPA unit. They all locked up in a house where they had placed guards. The rest of the UPA were to go to some action. after sunset, the group returned and began murdering the detainees. They took two people out of the hut into the barn and murdered them. They killed the first with a stake, and the other was struck twice over the head with a saber. This one, however, was blunt and only broke the skull bones, its blows were not fatal. The torturers, however, thought that the victim hit was dead. They threw it on the dead body and went for more victims. The wounded Pole opened the barn door on the other side and started running through the grain. He got to some barn, where he took refuge in a neighboring hay, and lost consciousness. In the morning a Ukrainian woman who came to buy hay for the cows found him. She called her husband and brought a piece of sheets to bind his head with. Her husband tried to find out where he was hurt, but he couldn't speak anymore. as a result of the damage to the skull, he was speechless. He just showed his hand in his pocket where he had his documents. The Ukrainian read and realized that the Polish aggrieved was from Przebraż. In the evening he made hay in the cart and, together with his wife, drove it to Przebraż. If the UPA caught them, they would murder them mercilessly. I know the whole matter perfectly, because the injured person was Dominik Kowalski.
Later he lived near me in Niemodlin. He died in 1985 and I knew him perfectly well. The remaining inhabitants of Przebraż, who were detained by the UPA in Ostrów, were brutally killed. In early May, Ludwik Malinowski went to the place of the murder with a group of partisans. The graves of the victims were discovered here, exhumed and brought to Przebraż. They were arranged next to the chapel arranged in the school. Before the funeral, a group of German officers came to take pictures of the victims and write down the protocol. The next day, the funeral of 16 victims of the tragedy took place at the cemetery in Chołopiny. In the coffins lined up in a row were: Helena Bergiel, adam Bergiel, Marcin Błażyński, Marian Bojkowski, Jan Bojkowski, antoni Kobylański, Ostrowski and Sawicki, whose names I do not remember, Franciszek Sinicki, Zenon Sinicki, agata Wierzbińska, Józef Wolak, Franciszek Wójcicki, Lutek Zimny, Izabela Wierzbińska and Zimna, whose name is also forgotten by me. Funeral executions were performed and a sermon was delivered by Fr Stanisław Szczypta – patriot and brave partisan. He outlined the life path and the last moments of the lives of the murdered with tears in his eyes. Fr Szczypta encouraged Przebraże to organize, create self–defense and connect with the leaders. This combination, in turn, was of increasing importance
