Omelanka

[The Ukrainians] murdered at least 55 Poles, but the hunt for those hiding in the forest continues in September. „During the time of a deadly threat, Poles put up crosses in the entire area, they were supposed to save the people from misfortunes through God's intercession. These crosses were called Jesus, Save Us from the inscription on the crossbeams. Three of them were built around Huta Stepańska, only one remained near the Słone Błoto health resort. This cross is an eyewitness to the extermination of Huta Stepańska. The attacking Banderites from the direction of Rudni went straight to the cross, driving a wedge between Huta Stepańska and Omelanka. Under the fire of the defenders, the attack broke down at the very cross, they did not progress any further, which allowed the people of Omelanka to get to Huta Stepańska. In the occupied area, however, they caught the wife of the former commander of self—defense, Hieronim Konwerski, Stanisława, and two daughters Janina, 18 years old. and Wanda, 16. The third d/o Leokadia, 11, was a bit further away and watched everything, despite the night it was bright, the glow of fires illuminated the area. First, they tormented their mother, when they thought that they had tormented her, took care of sister Janina, and cut her breasts just before she died. When it was Wanda's turn, she only asked not to cut her breasts, but to shoot them. She called by name to the torturers, a shot was fired, maybe one of the schoolmates took pity. After the war, Stanisława and her daughter Leokadia lived in Lublin and their descendants still live there. Old kolkhoz farmers told me how they were persuaded to remove the cross, but no one dared. Communists and atheists, were unsure of their beliefs, when dying they asked the swordsman (pop) to secretly sprinkle their coffin. And then nobody was interested in the fate of the cross, was Polish so inconvenient, but also Divine, how to move it then”.

Omelanka

After the fall of Huta Stepańska, they hid in the woods for two weeks, then the Germans came from Rafałówka and took them out, and there were many of them, a whole column. They passed through the burnt Huta Stepańska, Siedlisko, Wyrka and Soszniki. Dad told me about two corpses planted on a killed cow and a pig, they were supported by sticks. The men had to push the dead bodies out of the way with a long pole, they smelled so bad that it was impossible to approach and the horses did not go over the dead bodies  […] Omelanka ceased to exist on Bloody Night on July 16–17, 1943. After the fall of Huta Stepańska, most of the population found their way to Grabina by the tracks. Some of them, however, went to the forests, where they survived until the end of July, when the Germans came from Rafałówka to take the survivors. Few managed to get to Przebraż. Nobody can count the number of killed people”…
