Gajewski Jan residing in Oktawin, commune Mikulicze, county Włodzimierski was murdered by the UPA. When news came from the neighboring colonies that the Ukrainians were murdering – my family packed the most necessary things and went to Włodzimierz. On Sunday, July 11, 1943, they were no longer in the colony. A few days later, a week – a group of men, including Władysława's brother – Jan, decided to return to Oktawin and investigate the matter – whether it was possible to return or at least take the rest of the belongings. Jan never returned. He was crucified by the UPA in a tree, naked. He was always an elegant man, he wore a tie. And the torturers left the only tie for him.

Oktawin

The Ukrainians from neighboring villages murdered 7 Poles who did not leave the colony. Witness Apolonia Marel (born in 1930 in Oktawina): „In my home village we lived in harmony [with the Ukrainians]. But who stayed, [him] was tragically murdered. A gamekeeper, a bit of a communist, lived next door – because the Soviets were already there. He said: «I will not be harassed». Five children, one tiny, five‑year‑old, the rest so much bigger. They didn't burn our apartment, but stripped it, and that's how it was burning there day and night. They had kings in the basement, they bred them for five children. They hacked them up and into those cellars. That little one ran away, a Greek Catholic priest told me. The little one squealed so much, and they caught up with [murdered] and [yes] the whole family. Where these kings are… terrible. There were [people] still near the forest, and my grandfather lived [there] too. The rest, the poor, will not move them – but from where! At night, they took them to the woods and ordered them to be dug. My friend was there. They shot and in these pits [pushed]. Later, others came to bury them, but they were friends, they grew up close. Let those who come out alive! [Whoever is alive, let him go out!] It was July, her worms had already thrown in her wounds. She was my age of 13, 14. The father was already killed, he did not come out of the pit. And she and her mother survived. Those The Ukrainians who came to cover them did not finish them off. Many bodies lay in this cavity. This army was, like those bulwarks [UPA], all armed. She was badly injured, but survived. There was such a small child, the mother suckled, the mother was dead. Its hands were pierced with wire. I was young, but I saw many murdered people. In our village, whoever stayed, they murdered everyone. [Poles] did not expect [all of this]. Smert lacham [death to the Poles] they wrote – they wanted a Self–made Ukraine this way. When they murdered [people] behind our church, the men came by the night and say: «Are you still sitting?». They put them all in the barn and set them on fire. «Run while you still can, the Ukrainians–neighbors» – they said – «will not accost you». But it is not true – if we stayed, it would be the same”.

Wacław Wiciński: „Father's sister was murdered, a similar fate befell our neighbor, his wife and their five children. He was a gamekeeper and he thought they wouldn't touch him because he traded in timber. We escaped on Monday, and on Wednesday they murdered those who remained. The village was called Oktawin, because Poles settled there in the octave of Corpus Christi. All Octavin was burned”.
