Nowiny Horynieckie

The UPA from the sotnya „Zaliźniak” burned down Polish farms and murdered 26 Poles, entire families. Others: „On August 19, at dawn, Zaliźniak's sotnya attacked Nowiny, they left the forest from Świdnica and set fire to the village. Surprised people ran away, wrenched from sleep in their nightgowns, those who could not hide were murdered on the spot. When at dawn, Żaliźniak's sotnya attacked Ukrainian peasants armed with tools such as axes, the villages were burned down and Poles were murdered. Usually, during the attacks on villages, organized by the UPA, gangs of looters, consisting of local peasants, also took part in robbing their property. Frightened, 10‑year‑old Ewa Orłowska ran among the burning buildings, in the distance she saw the Polish partisan, Józef Kazik, who was hiding in Nowiny. He wanted to take the girl with him, but she did not have time to reach him, she was hit by a bullet, the Bandera tree ran up to her and killed her with a few shots. At home, the Krzych family was surprised by the Banderites. They were shot on the spot. The siblings Bernard and Helenka Krzych, who came to their family from France for holidays, slept in the barn, but the war broke out and they could not return home. That is why they stayed in Nowiny. In the morning shots woke them up and decided to run away. They were then found both dead on the road, holding hands. Near the burning barn, the Banderites did not manage to kill eighteen‑year‑old Marysia Orłowska. They hit her head with the butt, smashing her. Severely injured, she tried to move away from the fire, but she failed, her legs burned down to her knees, she dug holes in the ground with her hands. A Ukrainian with his family was also murdered at that time for having a Polish wife. On that fateful morning, 11 inhabitants of the” News were killed.
