Nowiny

The UPA massacred about 15 Poles. Zdzisław Świderski: „They were at the farm in Nowiny earlier on Sunday, May 30 in the afternoon. at some point, one of the inhabitants informed them that Łukasz Draszek was found dead in Pasieki near the forest (near the KOP barracks). It was not known whether it happened on that day or on Saturday. a group of men decided to go there and find out more. Then another message reached them that there were some strangers in this forest. They chose «to scare» away. They were near the forest when they were shot from there. There was a machine gunner in the tree. Ours were unarmed except for antoni Łukasik, who had a Russian rifle. The moment he was aiming for it on the tree, he was fatally hit. The discarded weapon was taken over by another from the group, but he did not fire from it, because the claw of the ramrod was broken (the scale had to be knocked out with a ramrod). The opponents were shooting quite accurately, adam Woźniak was also hit in the drumstick. Then they retreated to the village taking the killed and wounded. The next day, a dozen or so people went to Nowiny again, incl. me and my parents. We wanted to take some hidden things from there, such as grain, potatoes, salt, clothes. We were also accompanied by a small unit of Soviet partisans who were stationed in Stara Huta at that time. But they just toured our village and came back. after a short time, we were also ready to depart, the car was loaded. But then my parents decided to plant some cabbage – because the seedling was already the right size. While planting, Michał Gadowski and my uncle Jan Świderski came with some bundles, to come with us. Soon after, Jan Panewski came shouting from afar that we should run away because some strange men, probably Bandera followers, entered the nearby farm. Then he, uncle and Gadowski with his wife went cross–country towards Stara Huta (about 2 km). I wanted to see what was going on and I went to the barn. I just walked in there and started looking around when quite the other side was shot at me. I looked in that direction and saw a thug aiming at me in a standing position, in black or navy blue uniforms. In a fraction of a second I tilted my head back hearing the whistle of the bullet and the shot. I jumped from the top of the barn onto the outbuilding and onto the ground. all this happened in front of the Father who harnessed the horse. I shouted to my parents to go alone, and I will run to the partisans to ask for help. On the way I overtook my uncle and the others. I ran into Bujak's yard, where Gorczyca was – I said what was happening. They ordered to take a wagon that it would be faster. Gorczyca's wife, Helena, their daughters and Bujak's grandson, Kazimierz Woźniak, went with me. We rushed at a gallop, quickly crossing the woods. In Stara Huta, next to Kubacki's house, the commander of the partisan unit Szytow stood in his stride. When I said what happened, and earlier he must have heard shots, he just asked me something and after a while he directed six riders there – I remember that they had darker skin, they were Mongols or Uzbeks. Two came back very quickly, said something to the commander, and after a while the whole unit moved there. The partisans were well armed, they even had small mortars. Shortly after that, there was a real shooting – when the guerrillas returned, I heard that they killed and wounded a few Bandera followers. It was then that I heard this tragic news that my parents and several other people had been murdered in this forest. When they passed that way shortly for me. Before the evening of that day, I went there with the others – the sight was terrible, I have it in my eyes all the time. Our cart was standing on the edge of the forest, the horse was killed. Dad was lying next to the wagon, his chest was full of something sharp. I found my mother a little deeper in the forest – I think she ran away and they caught her there. She had not only numerous stab wounds, but also broken hands and all fingers. Both Gadowscy were also murdered – he had a shattered head from which a brain spilled out. She was not found in the forest until three days later – her breasts were cut off in her pocket. We transported the murdered to Stara Huta. all bodies (6 – 7) were wrapped in white sheets. The funeral mass was celebrated by the priest on the spot, in the Węgłowski garden. The commander of the partisan unit also spoke and said that innocent people died from the fascists and that they would avenge them. after that, an honorable salvo was fired three times. all those who died that day were buried in one grave in the cemetery in Moczulanka. In total, on May 30–31, 1943, 11 inhabitants of the village of Nowiny died: 1. Stanisław Świderski (father), 39; 2. Jadwiga Świderska (mother), 46 years old; 3. Draszek Łukasz, 67 years old; 4. Draszek Jan, 32 years old; 5. Draszek Bolesław, 29 years old; 6. Gadowski Michał (my godfather's brother), 50; 7. Gadowska antonina (wife of the Ministry of Economy), 48 years old; 8. Łukasik antoni, 37 years old; 9. Perlikowski Władysław, 18 years old; 10. Perlikowska antonina, 31 years old; 11. Panewski Szczepan, 50 years old. My and my siblings' life, as well as all the inhabitants of Nowiny, was one great wandering – temporary flats in various villages with relatives and friends, living in constant fear, uncertainty about tomorrow ”.
