Nienowice
Excerpt from Maria Maruszko's memoirs about the murders of Ukrainians in Nienowice by soldiers of the Polish Army:
„It was Saturday, July 22, 1945. It was going to be a nice day in July […] In the morning our father sent me to take cannabis to Stawisko […] About the later events in Nienowice I was told by my father. After the arrival of the army and a good shooting began, he ordered his brother to run home, take the mare and run from the field where they were mowing, to hide. They mowed a little more, but the bulltes whistled so much that it was impossible to mow any further. They lay down to the furrow […] , but the Klufas family, mowing behind a small Babinka ravine some 300 meters away, did not do it. Hołowaczycha even said that they were stubborn people, because they mowed, even though the bullets whistled like that. And the bullets cut them down. Petro and Maria Klufas fell side by side […]
The Sunday, July 23, 1945 came […] About 9 o'clock the army came to burn down the village and rob again. Civilian Poles came with them. I did not want to see our house on fire and I hid with Paulina to the orchard […]
The air was heavy with the stench, everything was burning up […] Those who returned to the ashes despaired terribly, but everyone said:
— «There will still be a home, it is good that we are safe and sound».
However, many were murdered, thrown into the fire. Older people died: Jewa Drewko, Stepan Łażowski, Matwij Ożibko, Mychajło Slipota, Kateryna Szot, Mychajło Zajlo, Petro and Marta Klufasy […]
I will come back to the events after our return home from Bołoń […] They killed Tchirycha from Zaleska Wola — they killed her, they left her in front of her house, her body was burnt […]
But in the neighborhood it was like this: Petr Rożak's wife […] left the barn with a jug of milk. Shots rained down on her and she was seriously injured for carrying milk to the 'banderites'. After a few hours, she died of wounds. Our father, after the army left the village, made her a coffin, but people said that only fragments of the burnt body were placed inside it […]
The night and the next day passed calmly, but it was the silence before the tragedy […] After midnight we heard terrible barking of dogs, and our dog just howled […] Finally, daddy told mum to open [the door to the house]. Many of them came in. They forbade the lamp to be lit. The major turned to his mother:
— «Where is your husband?».
Mom pointed to the bed, and the major came up and said:
— «Get up, landlord, show us the way, for we have gone astray».
My father got up, sighed and went with the military […]
We were awake and waiting for my father […] [Finally] one man asked her mother's name, and when he heard it, he discovered a terrible truth:
— «Your husband was killed here, in Chotyniec. He asked to tell his wife and children that ‹My name is Ivan Ciż and I was here›».
Mom went to a farmer named Buszko. There she was told where her father's body was. They shot my father not far behind the village, behind the houses on the edge, in the furrow”.
