description

general info

Mosty

The UPA murdered 14 Poles. „The village of Mosty, situated among rocky hills and bumps, with difficult access, survived the Banderites attack before Easter. 11 people died, mostly old people. Part of the population took refuge in Kąty, and about 35 people with small children stayed there for a few more days. There was a second attack on Mosty, three people died. Immediately after the second attack, the survivors planned to flee to the town of Krzemieniec, taking a straight road next to the murdered Antonowiecka Steelworks, through the village of Stożek. In the center of the village of Stożek, there is a high mountain, similar in shape to a huge haystack. At the foot of this mountain, on the south side only, there is a slight hill, and on the other three sides there is a plain covered with forest. There were two roads going around the mountain, but coming together behind the mountain. Three carts set off from Mosty, on which the elderly and children have settled. The young went on foot. In front of Stożek, they met a car with five Germans and a gamekeeper friend. The riders suggested that the fugitives should wait for them, and on their return they would lead them through the village of Stożek. It was dangerous to wait in this neighborhood, so they moved on. The carts drove along the southern road and the hikers avoided the mountain along the northern road. When the carts entered the village, the Ukrainians opened fire with their rifles, then approached the carts, and gave them shovels while still alive to dig holes. They threw the dead and wounded into the dug pits, and they also drove the healthy ones to the pits. But something happened. The bandits disappeared. The healthy and the wounded came out of the pit. The reason for the disappearance of the bandits was that the gendarmes were shot at when they returned, and having a radio transmitter, they notified their headquarters in Kremenets. The military police from Krzemieniec immediately set off by car to Stożek to save the attacked. But it was too late. The Banderites shot the Germans and the gamekeeper. Gendarmes started to burn the village of Stożek and shoot everyone they found. In this way, the bandits were forced to flee. Those who followed the right path all survived. Several people who were already below survived. With the help of the Germans, they reached Krzemieniec. The despair of mothers and fathers whose children were killed knew no bounds. Listowscy Weronika and Wojciech lost two children and a mother. Of those who were driving, 22 people died, mostly children”.
