The UPA spent 5 Polish families (about 25 people) in the basement and threw grenades; the cellar collapsed and the ground above it was still moving for some time.

Markowicze

Nearby, a Ukrainian friend had an order to murder a Polish friend with whom he went to school together. They wanted to try him, his heroism, he attacked her at home in broad daylight, it was still a week before the general murder, he stabbed her in the back, and she started screaming that Misha, what are you doing? And he says to her: you, Poland, where your heart is. When she fell, he struck her a heartbeat. He killed her, father and mother. It was the first bandit attempt in a village where there were 5 Polish families. They were herded to a basement, such a dugout, and thrown grenades over them so that the basement buried them immediately. The Ukrainians, who were against it, told us that they were wounded and that the earth was moving for three days, such torment was caused by the Ukrainians to these poor people. It was sometime at the end of June, in the village of Markowicze near Horochów, when they murdered the Podkowiński family and those 5 families.
