description

general info

Markowa

The local Banderites and the neighboring villages murdered 57 Poles, including the parish priest Mikołaj Ferenc. During the murder, they did not use any firearms so that the shots would not scare other Poles. „My mother Stanisława Rafalska and her mother Anna Rafalska née Flawka, were eyewitnesses to the events in Markowa on the night of January 14, 1944. My uncle Stanisław Rafalski, aged 21–25, was murdered at home that night. From the account of mother and grandmother: The Banderites came in a sleigh and the horses bells were heard. The door to the house was closed and everyone was going to bed. They banged on the door, grandmother told Staszek to run away, but he went to open it. When he opened it, the question was asked: Are you Ukrainian or Lach? Lach replied. He was hit on the head with an ax. He fell backward and the brain flew out of the broken skull. My mother was 8 at the time. They lived near the Leśniczówka in Markowa, and the house was one of the first in the village to be covered with a sheet. I did not find my uncle's name in the list of victims from Markowa and I think it would be good to add them to the list of murdered people? It would be a little tribute to his death. Apparently he was buried in a mass grave in Markowa?”.

The victims of the murder were mistreated. For example, the corpse of the late Father Ferenz Mikołaj is shown that his head was cut off, his right arm was chopped off and the abdomen was ripped open. – Corpse of St. Mr. Niżałowski, Stanisław, a US citizen, and P. show that his head was cut off, his left arm was chopped into three parts and the abdomen was split open. The photographic photos taken accurately illustrate the horrors of the murder. In the house of Cierpisz Józef of Markowa, the family met three attackers – the murderers, who are: The Ukrainians Seniak Paweł, Seniak Wasyl and Mełniczuk Michał or Józef.
