Maniów

The Banderites murdered 8 Poles. „On September 18, 1944. Between 11 and 1 p.m. from the Krąglica area I went to Grandma's house in Maniów to bring underwear for a change, cigarettes and something to eat. I entered the house, it was silent, no voices were heard. I looked into the kitchen, where I saw my sister Stefa, chasing potatoes and rocking her 9–month–old cousin, Gienia, lying in the cradle. I had a feeling, it felt as if connected. I thought maybe because I had been out in nature for a long time, in shacks. When asked for something to eat, the sister said that everything was buried, because at night unknown people took food, clothes and underwear. She told me to wait until Mom came with the rest of the family from digging potatoes. They were supposed to come for dinner because the potato field was only 500 meters from the forester's lodge. I still felt uncomfortable and got stomach pains from nerves. I went behind the farm building where there was a toilet. When I left the toilet, my eyes fell on the hazel trees growing on the bank of the escarpment descending into the Balniczka, which flows into the Osława. There were a lot of hazelnuts on the hazel, so I decided to get a bit of a pick. After a few minutes, I heard voices, and I opened the branches to see who was going. I froze because on the other side of the river there were UPAs with weapons, in various uniforms with their sleeves rolled up. I quickly retreated into the yard near the well and pretended to be drinking water from a bucket. At the same time, the second row of UPAs followed the road from Balnica, and the third row diagonally across from Kuczera, where Grandma, Mother and children were digging potatoes. I made the decision to run back to Kunicki. I ran from the well towards the railway booth, which stood 70 m above the track. I could not run any further, because the area was surrounded by UPA. They even took up positions with rkmami, as if they were liquidating a large military group. Standing behind the booth, I watched what was happening. I saw how they lead Grandma, Mother and my aunt with their children from the field. They led them into the house, and there were terrible shouts. They were murdered with knives and clubs, which were often sacrificed by nationalist Greek Catholic clergy. The scream was so loud I almost passed out. I guess it made an impression on the UPA as they started firing into the air to drown out the screams. Immediately they started to take the corpses in the bloody sheets out of the house and threw them down the slurry. The mutilated mother was scattered around the garden. A 9–month–old Gienia, hit only in the head, was thrown into the pit and covered with earth. The layer of earth was so thin that at night the handle was put out and it survived until the morning of the next day. I continued to observe the actions of UPA bandits, they robbed everything from the house. My whole life stood in front of my eyes. And as some say, when faced with death, before my eyes, in some tunnel, very bright and colorful, all life passes in utter numbness  […] With time I decided to go to the Filipiak mill, to the mill in Maniów. However, first I went to the area of Szczerbanówka, where I left my clothes on my way home in Maniów. I found nothing on the spot. I walked along copper shielded with blackthorns towards the mill in Maniów. After observing, I found that I could enter the building. There were no strangers, and the mill was closed because there was no water in the weir. The housekeeper, Mr. Filipiak and her daughter Helena, were in the house. They were very happy and told me to sit down. At that time, Mr. Filipiak came and we greeted him. He asked where I spent the night. I told how it was. He asked if all I was wearing made up of clothes? I confirmed. Then he came out and brought me a Slovak uniform and boots. We talked about the murder of my family. Mrs. Filipiakowa said that on the next day, despite the UPA ban, the Greek Catholic priest and the village administrator Dobrianski forced a burial. Filipiakowa said that the murdered were buried in three chests, the remains of Mother and Sister in one, Grandma and aunt in the other, and children in the third. The burial was carried out at the Greek Catholic cemetery near the church in Maniów. Quite a lot of local Lemkos participated in the funeral, shocked by the murder committed by the UPA  […] List of those murdered on September 18, 1944, Maniów, commune Wola Michowa, Lesko County, Province Lviv: Stachura Magdalena, age 63; Wesołkin Agnieszka, 39; Wesołkin Stefania, age 14: Olszańska Anna, age 29; Olszańska Maria, age 8; Olszański Zbigniew, age 6; Olszański Sigismud, age 4; Olszańska Genowefa 9 months”.
