Manasterz

Fragment of Wołodymyr Zaobidny's memoirs about the murders of Ukrainians in Manasterz by bandits from Polish villages and soldiers of the Polish Armed Forces:
There were 4 murderers in Manasterz, who, together with a gang from Wiązownica, attacked our villages: Kisiel known‑as 'Struk', Jan Malec, Jan Polak, Władysław Sajdutka. The last one killed over 20 people in our village. He killed Zadni and his 16‑year‑old daughter, and injured his wife in the face, but she survived (she would be a good witness). He also killed my wife's aunt and a 15–month–old child in [her] arms (and the grandmother who survived was a witness here).
[…] There were frequent raids. The largest one during the transport to Ukraine in 1945  […] The army took away somewhere 25 families, killing several people at the same time.
A week has passed. My father returned with me to the village, but not to his home, because we were starting to get hungry. We milked the cow and had milk, but we had nothing left to add to the milk. The army used carts to go back and forth, bringing wood to the construction site of the bridge built on Lubaczówka river. And they killed Andrij Macyna  […]
In July 1946 we saw from the yard a group of people walking along the road from the forest  […] It was a unit of the Polish Army. First, they went to school, talked to the teacher, then rushed into our yard like angry wolves. Some ran home, others ran to the barn. They took me and my father home and started beating them. I was beaten in the kitchen, my father in the room. Having smashed the chairs, they beat us with wires and hooks  […] In the morning the lieutenant led my father to the San and shot him with a shot in the back of the head. Thus, a lieutenant of the Polish Army killed another man  […]
Thus my list of 38 victims of our village Manasterz:
Marija Bojarska, Ołeksandra Bojarska (a 7‑month‑old child killed by Władysław Sajdutka), Matwij Nedbajło, Tacianna Penciurek, Josyf Nezerebko, Omelan Tacian, Mykhailo Pidwitka, Mykhailo Doda, Dmytro Doda, Omelan Nestir, Fedir Macyna, Vasyl Macyna, Iwan Savuła, Dmytro Savuła, Mykhailo Haśko, Illa Zaobidny — my father, Hryhorij Bojarski, Stepan Borowy, Andrij Macyna, Jaroslawice, Nestir, Nestir (I forgot my name), Franciszek Kwieciński, Kwieciński (three, I do not know the first name), Duda with an unknown name, Kubach, Josyf Ryjuch, Kubachows — two, names unknown to me, Illa Kycia, Wołodymyr Bandura, Zadni with an unknown name, his daughter, Jewa Fłys and her daughter with an unknown name

Fragment of an interview with Miron Bojarski, born in 1926 in Manasterz:
— «When did the Polish raids begin?»
— «We managed to escape first, in the first days, because they had traitors [among them]: we were informed about it».
— «Wiązownica attacked first?»
— «It varied, few were from our village, there were those from across the San river, from Czerwona Wola, from Wiązownica. They organized themselves into a gang. We escaped from our village on March 3, 1945. We did not return home until the harvest. We were there, like Dereweckie, Chodanie, it was not far from Cetula. We lived so that the lice almost ate us. There was nothing to eat. When the army came to Czerwona Wola and moved to Cetula, only then did we return home»  […]
— «Who was the first victim?»
— «The first victim was my uncle near the school, in March 1945. Since then, no one slept at home anymore. In the day at first it was still quiet, but in the evening they robbed and robbed, and then even during the day there were attacks. After the robbery, killings started, leaving no one alive. They killed 20 people somewhere. My wife's old, 80‑year‑old neighbor lived in Mielniki. Iwan Duda came, he might have been 25 years old. He did not want to go to the partisans, he thought to hide and survive. This grandmother also lived with a woman with two children. And when this action came, when everyone fled to the forest, grandma did not run away, and this woman stayed, and this Duda with them. They killed them all in my wife's orchard».
— «When did that happen?»
— «It was April. And also Szychnowa and a girl, together in their orchard they killed 7 people. The wife's mother with children did not manage to escape, they ran to their neighbor, a Polish woman. She grabbed his wife's mother and shouted ‹Ukrainian woman, we will kill her!›, But the father of this Polish woman said that he would not let her kill her, that she was not a Ukrainian, but Polish».
— «What were the names of the people killed in the orchard in Mielniki?»
— «Grandma named Neścir, boy Iwan Kubach, girl with two children was Olha Chodan, and Słota, the woman with her daughter. In addition, in Mielniki they killed the old Kuca, Tacjanna Ryjuszka and the other Duda. Marysia Ryjuszka managed to jump over the fence, they killed Tacjanna on the fence, and father, and they hurt mother. And four at the Kwieciński family. Their eldest daughter climbed into the attic and pulled the ladder behind her, she survived, but her parents, brother and sister were killed».
— «Where were they buried?»
— «In Mielniki, the cemetery was in the village, by the San River. It was impossible to get there, they were shooting. The people themselves did the burying. Sawka has escaped, because they would have killed him on the spot».
— «What about other attacks?»
— «First there was an attack on the village, then on Mielniki. In the village, they killed Haśkóws, Sawułóws, Bojarska with her daughter, and three Macins, who were called Mazurek in the village. This is before the attack on Mielniki».
— «How did it happen?»
— «We ran away with the cattle, they shot as at hares»
— «Anybody else was killed?»
— «Well, Zaobidnys  […] During the 'Vistula' operation, the army killed young Zaobidny and Macina. They fled the village, and they thought they were banderites. And maybe they were going for potatoes, because the hunger was goddamn. They threw Zaobidny into the San river, but he gpt caught on the island, they draggeddragged him out and buried him by the San, but now he is in the cemetery. And Macina was buried where he died»
