Ławrów

[The Ukrainians] murdered 9 Poles with bayonets and threw the bodies into a well, including a 7—person family with 5 children aged 5 months to 12. Stanisław M (born 1935): „Mr. B., who was friends with his neighbor, the host Ukrainian IS, he told me that the whole family had to leave because IS warned him that The Ukrainians would be murdering in Lavrov. B. took some clothes and food on a horse—drawn cart and left with their daughter to Lutsk. I did not go because I had rabbits and pigeons, besides, grandma B. and her disabled daughter stayed in Ławrów. We lived like that for another month. Mrs. J. moved into the house with her husband and seven children. There were twelve of us on the farm. On July 14, we started harvesting. The scythe was dull and Mr. J. went to the IS to pat her out. I was sitting in a tree and picking cherries. I saw that some German army — it seemed to me because I saw people in German uniform — he goes to our farm. There were perhaps sixteen of them. Antek, s/o J., said that maybe they were going to get their father, so that he would go to Lutsk. I said that they were probably Ukrainian bandits and it would be better if we hide. When these soldiers approached, they called Antek to bring his father. Antek went to the IS, and I ran home to hide. I learned that the two men dressed in German uniforms were our neighbors, the sons of a Czech farmer. They were about 25 years old and I knew they had joined Ukrainian bands. He didn't join the IS gang because he shot his leg, he was lame and they didn't take him  […] Grandma, her crippled daughter, J. and her children were all at home. I walked in and said that I had to hide because the Ukrainians had come. I squeezed into the bunk standing in the kitchen on which there was a straw mattress, and I hid behind a wooden scaffold. Kazia, one of J.'s daughters, hid with me. Everything happened very quickly. The entire house was surrounded by Ukrainians. Two  […] came in, they spoke Polish, asked who the Pole was, started beating and told everyone to lie down on the kitchen floor. Lamentation began. The Ukrainians had rifles with bayonets. The first one was beaten by grandma B. and Mrs. J. The children were running around the kitchen, they wanted to hide somewhere, there was a screeching, screaming, crying, but no chance to escape. The Ukrainians pierced all the children with bayonets many times. Then they stabbed with bayonets under the bed, where Kazia and I were sitting. Her three younger sisters fled there. The Ukrainians saw it and one bent  […] , hit them several times with a bayonet and stabbed these children. Kazia had pierced hands, legs and chest, her blood was running out, but the wounds were not serious. The bayonet missed me because I was covered with a scaffold  […] When the Ukrainians left and it got quiet, Kazia and I left the hideout  […] In the yard, I saw the bodies of Mr. J. and Antek, whose heads were cut off by the bandits with axes by a stump. They were lying next to the stump. We hid in the crops and decided to run away through the fields. Night fell and we entered a house where a light was on. It turned out that the Bandera followers had a meeting there. We spent the night next door. Kazia was injured, so she stayed, and in the morning I returned to our farm through the fields. From my hiding place, I saw that some people in civilian clothes loaded the bodies of the dead on the cart and drove away. I followed them in the fields. They reached the village of Kościuszków, where J. had previously lived, there they threw the dead into a well in J. I returned to Lavrov and met Mr. B. who came to see what was happening on the farm. We went for Kazia together. On the way, we were stopped by the Germans from the unit fighting the Ukrainians and helping Poles to escape. We explained where and why we were going. The German ordered the house where Kazia was to be surrounded; was taken. The Germans found guns in that house, and the Ukrainians who hid there started shooting. Then the German soldiers set fire to the house, threw grenades inside and no one was saved from it”.
