description

general info

Korniów

I was born after the war, but I remember well the stories of my family, especially my grandmother and aunt, about the horrific murders in the Horodenka district, and more precisely in Korniów (a village on the right bank of the Dniester). In September 1944, the Banderites brutally murdered members of my family: Łukasz Knihnicki, 46, his daughter Helena 17, son Józef, 18/19 – chopped up with axes and cut, buried in the backyard of their own house (?); this is what my older sister tells, while my 80‑year‑old neighbor from Korniów claims that they were buried in the cemetery: Anastazja Knihnicka (née Wąsowicz) approx. 38 years, her son Tadeusz 6/7 years old, daughter Krystyna 8/9 years murdered and burned; Aniela Hawrylewicz nee Łubyk, approx. 50, her husband Józef, approx. 50, buried in an orchard; Krzywak Antoni, approx. 26 years old, resident of a nearby village – Olchowiec, killed in Korniów. There is the last moment to find out the truth about your loved ones at the source. A few more older people in every Ukrainian village remember it perfectly! the tragedy of Poles. They talk about it in whispers and preferably at the door of their homes. I have listened to some of them personally to confirm the tragedies I heard in my childhood. Let's not wait for them to die, that's where you have to go and talk to the eyewitnesses of the crime.
