Witness Michalina Puszkarska: „My maiden name is Michalina Michalewicz and I was born on September 22, 1924 in the town of Kąkolniki, Rohatyn district, in the Stanisławów Province in Ukraine. When World War II broke out, I was 15 years old  […] In a neighboring village, a young Ukrainian was supposed to marry a Polish girl soon, but instead of getting married, he killed the girl, following the order of his political masters! Also in one of the nearby towns, the Ukrainians captured the priest, cut off his tongue, put stones in his mouth and ironically saying that he would die like Saint Stephen, they cut out a cross on his back !! In a mixed Polish–Ukrainian family, where the father was Ukrainian and the mother was Polish, an adult son who suddenly felt Ukrainian turned to his father with a proposal to kill his mother. The father, seeing what was glowing and unable to come to terms with the degenerate attitude of his own child, offered to kill the mother on the way through the forest to the neighboring town where the mother's sisters lived. Soon they were on their way, secretly taking two axes. When the time was right and the axes were taken out and the son swung at his mother, the father struck the ax first and killed his own son !! In January 1944, the neighboring village of over three hundred numbers, in which Poles lived alone, was surrounded at night by the Ukrainians and set on fire. Those who escaped were shot and those caught were slaughtered and murdered in the cruelest way. People hidden in shelters under burning buildings also died. As a result of these brutal and cruel murders, the Ukrainian soil was flowing with Polish blood. This situation took the greatest intensity in 1944 and its aim was to completely eliminate Poles from these areas. Our farm was not set on fire only because it was situated between two Ukrainian farms to which the fire could have spread. However, the situation became so tense that it was impossible to delay any longer. The parents decided that they would move to relatives to Stanisławów with their three children. My father took us there in February 1944, and he and his brother, despite his mother's protests, returned to Kąkolewniki for some things. There, they were both captured by the Ukrainians and murdered together with several other people in the nearby forest. To this day, my heart is broken when I imagine my unfortunate Father and my dear brother at the hour of their death! How did they look at each other, what did they think how they were saying goodbye to each other, to us, to their life so far and to the world! These dramatic scenes accompanied me in nightmarish dreams for many years and that's why I wanted to RUN FROM there AS FAR as possible!”.
