On the night of May 7–8, 1943, a gang of Ukrainian nationalists attacked Katerynówka. The buildings of Polish families began to burn almost simultaneously. There was a howl of dogs, a roar of cattle, a neighing of horses, a squeal, a squeal. The crackling and roaring of the enormous flames drowned out everything. Hell was born. Everyone saved themselves from the fire, while bandits caught people running out of their houses and murdered them. Although they possessed firearms, they carried out the murders with knives in the most brutal way. The intestines were ripped open and released, the arms and legs were torn off, the children were killed by hitting their heads against the walls of houses etc  […] The murder was terrible. Everything was burnt, the remains were still burning, you could smell the burned animals, human bodies were lying next to each other, some half–burned. I remember it all as if it were today. When it became light, I ran around all the murdered, counting that someone may need help. Unfortunately, only a small child, the two‑year‑old s/o Piotr Mękal, was still alive. He had both hands and feet broken, half conscious he asked to drink and died in a moment. The second person who showed signs of life was Zofia Koper, a young girl. Her abdomen was ripped open, her intestines mingled with earth, and soaked with blood. She died in terrible torments. The rest of the people were already dead. Some of them were cruelly slaughtered with knives, and each was naked in half, as he had settled down to sleep. She died in terrible torments. The rest of the people were already dead.
