Jurydyka

The UPA massacred the Polish population living in 18 houses (approx. 90–100 people, counting 5–6 people per house), chased some of them into barns and burned them alive. On July 8, 2018, President Andrzej Duda laid flowers in the field of this village, by a dirt road, during his visit to Volhynia on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Ukrainian genocide committed against the Polish population. Kolonia Pokuta located near the town of Ołyka in the district of Lutsk is mentioned in the book by W. and E. Siemaszko as the colony Jurydyka / Pokuta / on pp. 281 – 582. On May 2, 1943, the Ukrainians murdered 63‑year‑old Franciszek Oroń on this colony, May 28, 1943 The UPA murdered 6 Poles: Weronika Kownacka née Ostrowska, 43, her children: Teresa, 7, Jan, 5, Antoni, 4, and Florian, 72, and Zofia Szyszkowska, 72. In September 1943, the UPA massacred the Polish population living in 18 houses, chased some of them into barns and burned them alive. In February 1944 / according to other witnesses, during field work / the Ukrainians murdered 3 Poles: Maria Armatys, 21, Jan Armatys, 23, and Władysław Kownacki, 60. On p. 582, the Siemaszkos give a total of 60 Polish victims in this colony, it would appear, therefore, that there would be 2 or 3 victims per house, which is undoubtedly an understated number, taking into account grandparents, parents and children.
