general info

Jeziorany Czeskie

A group of around 10 UPA members, armed with rifles, axes, knives and a saw for cutting a tree, murdered 14 Poles, including two families who had escaped from Jeziorany Szlacheckie, although they had previously paid the Ukrainians with gold for their safety and received promises that nobody would do anything. able. All persons were tortured for 4 –5 hours, inflicting numerous injuries. Women had their breasts cut off and their faces massacred, they were all stabbed with bayonets. They started with the youngest members of the family and ending with the oldest. During the murder of „the Ukrainian insurgents” said that the victims of „must die for a long time because they are good” people. The following people died: 48‑year‑old Stanisław Biernacki, his approximately 45‑year‑old wife Maria, their children: 24‑year‑old Franciszek, 22‑year‑old Stefania, 20‑year‑old Halina, 18‑year‑old Bronisława and 5‑year‑old Jadwiga; second family: 41‑year‑old Józef Biernacki, his 39‑year‑old wife Marta, their daughters: 16‑year‑old Stanisława and the other, 14‑year‑old; as well as the teacher of these children from Peców and staying with Józef Biernacki: 45‑year‑old Ewelina Budkiewicz – Marta Biernacka's sister and 45‑year‑old Sinicki – Józef Biernacki's nephew.

In the courtyard of a Czech named Kopecki, the owner of the mill, I saw the bloody harvest of the murders of two Biernacki families — Stanisław and Józef, from Jeziorany Szlacheckie. To this day, I can smell fresh blood and a terrible image of the murdered. To this day, I cannot free myself from the terrible sight of this crime.
[My] father in shock, hidden under the grain warehouse, was an eyewitness to the tragedy all the time.
Biernacki, one of the richer inhabitants of Jeziorany Szlacheckie, wanted to save their lives by an agreement with the Ukrainians — of course, for a considerable tribute — but this did not help and they gathered all of them in [Jeziorany Czeskie], where a terrible mass murder took place in the courtyard of the Kopecki farm.
My father told me in detail about the course of the tragedy. Initially, they gave the son of Biernacki —Franciszek (my school friend) a rifle and told him that if he shoots his father, they would let everyone go. When this did not happen, killing began with axes, knives and bayonets. The noise and screams of the murdered people spread throughout the village, but the inhabitants could not help and stop the crime — they hid — they were paralyzed by great fear. The father recalls in his mind the words of the main Ukrainian commander of the murder, uttered at the beginning:
«Mr Biernacki, you are good man — we will kill you slowly».
The words and description of this crime were repeated by my father to everyone until the end of his days, and the emotions that accompanied him always ended in nervous breakdowns.
That afternoon, the Ukrainians took away the horribly massacred remains of the murdered and buried 14 people in a mass grave in an unknown place.
To etch permanently and record this crime in my memory — all the murdered were very well known to my Father and me, therefore it is my duty to keep them in the collective memory. Here they are:
The family of Biernacki Stanisław
Biernacki Stanisław — father c. 60‑years—old
Maria Biernacka — wife, c. 55‑years—old
Biernacki Franciszek (my friend) — son, c. 17‑years—old
Biernacka Stefania (my friend) — daughter c. 15‑years—old
Biernacka Halina — daughter c. 16‑years—old
Biernacka Bronisława — Biernacki's mother 80‑years—old
Jadwiga Biernacka — Biernacki's cousin 70‑years—old
The Biernacki Józef family
Biernacki Józef — father 65‑years—old
Biernacka Marta — mother 60‑years—old
Biernacka Stanisława — Marta's mother 80‑years—old
Biernacki Zbigniew — brother 60‑years—old
Biernacki NN — brother, 55‑years—old
Budkiewicz Jan — Józef's cousin 50‑years—old
Budkiewicz Marta — Jan's wife 50‑years—old
A total of 14 people.
The shadow of this tragedy, as one of a thousand episodes of genocide, will weave its path through the generations, and may it remain in the memories for posterity
